i was bored so i looked thro my cd collection (which took me ages as those of u who know me would expect) and i thought More people should hear this music, so Im going to recommend some rock/punk/metal/gothic albums which I think everyone should hear:

1)REFUSED - The Shape Of Punk To Come - recebt album from now defunct swedish hardcore punks

2)IGGY POP & THE STOOGES - Raw Power - for an album of 1973 this still kicks the shit out of EVERYTHING! Its the greatest album ever, listen and you will agree

3)DEFTONES - Adrenaline - when I mention Deftones to anyone, people mention White Pony (shite) and Around The Fur (some good songs, nothin special) but NO-ONE ever mentions this album!! Unsurprisingly, its easily their best

4)PIXIES - Surfer Rosa - a must have, their best album, try and get the edition with the debut EP Come On Pilgrim added on at the end

5)PIXIES - Doolittle - just as good as Surfer Rosa some days, more commercial, still very strange

6)KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - Alive Or Just Breathing - wow! I bought this album recently and its become one of my favourite metal albums, its just magnificent!

7)EARTHTONE9 - Arc Tan Gent - saw it coming didnt u? well i do rant on about hte lack of this stunning band quite a lot but listen to this album and ull find out why Im so obsessed

8)DEAD KENNEDYS - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables - The best 70s punk album ever made.

9)DROPKICK MURPHYS - Sing Loud Sing Proud - The best 00s punk album yet

10)TIGER ARMY - The Power Of Moonlight - Ah, where would we be without the cross between punk and country that is the genre psycho-billy? We wouldnt have albums as addictive as this for a start!

11)SUBLIME - 40oz To Freedom - Cool as hell reggae-punk songs about getting stoned, prostitutes and rape

12)VOLTAIRE - either Devils Briss or Almost Human - A NYC Goth comic artist who sings songs about necrophilia, beheading people and killing ur ex lover along to the tune of 18th century waltzes and tangos

13)THE CURE - Pornography - this magnificent bands darkst album, the scariest album ever! First line: "It doesnt matter if we all die"

14)NINE INCH NAILS - anything, great band

15)TOOL - anything, best band around, greatest singer ever

16)MOGWAI - My Father My King - yeah ok, its not metal or punk and it is a 20 minute long instumental but fuck it! This is the ludest and best single of the year so far. Some people find it too heavy to listen to, some find it too dull, some people just get totally captured by its thunderous drums, squealing guitar and several minutes of feedback!

MOGWAI!!!! MOGWAI, MOGWAI, MOGWAI!!!!! Never has such feedback been used to do such damage by so few. Their set at leeds last year is still winning the 'How long can you you make my ears ring for afterwards' by a clear day and a half (3 days in total). I still remember an NME live review of one of their shows a few years back where most of the audience left half way through the second song and the band themselve had to give in and get their bleeding ears seen too after the fourth or fifth.

They can be a totally awesome band and the live set is a spectacle to behold (they have light shows equally as sensory overloading as their music is).
I'm actually listening to 'My Father My King' for the first time as I type so I'll reserve judgement for now (though I have been told it's a bit to similar to 'Mogwai Fear Satan' to get excited over).

And to continue the 'recommendations' theme of the thread and the 'music that won't get played at Rocksoc' angle started with Mogwai (unless any of the DJ's are listening? Go on, you know I want you too), the new idlewild Album, 'The Remote Part' was out on Monday and is bloody good. Ignore the 'Wannabe REM' comparisons (I just don't see it, sorry), they're a fine and unique band. Having said that though, 'The Remote part' isn't a touch on their debut minialbum, 'Captain'. I've said that about every thing they've done since. Which is, ooh, everything else they've ever done.

Also, quick note, The 2002 Warped Tour Compilation is good for a laugh. Be warned, it contains Sum 41 briefly.

Oh, and Cloud, if you like Mogwai, check out The Rock of Travolta. A bit more succint and punchy but along the same lines and pretty good.

The Rock Of Travolta r cool, havent got the album yet, theres a lot of other good post rock bands out there, Godspeed You Black Emporer, A Silver Mount Zion, Hood, Dakota Suite etc. But Mogwai, TROT and THE MIGHTY Sigur Ros r the best

1)BOB DYLAN - Anything, but especially Blood On The Tracks, Highway 61 Revisited & Subterranean Homesick Blues

2)SIGUR ROS- Ageatis Byrjun - Stunning album from icelandic post-rockers who could soundtrack Lord Of The Rings in 1 song

3)LIFE WITHOUT BUILDINGS - Any Other City - glasgow-art-brat-indie-rock. They sound like a cross between Mogwais gentler moments and the Pixies chirpier moments with a female Robert Smith from the Cure ad-libbing over the music.In a word, addictive

4)THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - either The Velvet Underground And Nico or White Light/White Heat. Classic band, great albums

5)EELS - Daisies Of The Galaxy - Eels best and least depressing album

6)PRIMAL SCREAM - Screamadelica - classic come-down acid/gospel/indie/rock. Features the song Loaded, enough said

7)AIR - Moon Safari - EVERYONE should own this album

8)ARAB STRAP - The Week Never Starts Round Here - the UKs most depressing band since Joy Division. Its the wonderful Scottish sleaze that makes the difference

9)INCUBUS - SCIENCE - this could be played at RockSoc i guess.

10) AND YOU WILL KNOW THE TRAIL OF DEAD - Source Tags And Codes - EXCELLENT album, the punkier songs could be played at Rocksoc but they r not the best tracks.

Ok, I'd like to continue the post rock et all enthusing but I have to disagree at least on a couple of points.

Arab Strap are a fantastic band but I'd have to say Philophobia is miles and away their best record. And also add 'most graphic' to the description. Any band that can write lines like 'At least it's not my blood on the jonny' and 'It was the biggest cock she'd ever seen, but she had no idea where that cock had been' deserve to have them mentioned.

Similarly eels (Who Sim did play a couple of times last year, credit where it's due), Daisies of the Galaxy is definitely their least depressing album but not their best. I was disappointed with it compared to the first two and have to say that I'd consider Beautiful Freak to be my favourite though Efils Good and the title track off Electro Shock Blues are their best songs. Does anyone know if the stories behind why E.S.B was sooo down are true. The way I heard it both his mother('Dead of Winter') and his landlady died of cancer and his sister killed herself('Elizabeth on the bathroom floor') in between them recording the second album.
Also we have to mention the fact that eels managed to write one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and they called it 'It's a motherfucker'. Genius.

As for Mogwai being played at Rocksoc, several of their tracks could be played 'cause they have killer middle sections but do you think a Rocksoc DJ would play the full 15 minutes of 'Like Herod' for the suitably 'rock' middle 7 minutes. I don't see it happening, though I'd love to be proved wrong.

Oh, and if you can hang on till september, cloud, I'll happily give you a copy of 'My band is better than yours', The Rock of Travolta Album. Though I might have to raid your collection in return, it sounds pretty fantastic.

All the stories uve heard about stories behind Electro-Shcok Blues r in fact true, Last Stop Tjis Town is about his sister in particular (hence the 1st line "Ur dead, but the world keeps spinning"

The Rock Of Travolta plan sounds good, i loved the single We Love It When A Plan Comes Together and i practically creamed my undies wen i heard Giant Robo on the radio a few yrs back!

I havent got any Godspeed wot so ever, ive been tryin to find Levezos Skinny Fists Comme Antennas To Heaven for less than 15 quid but that seems impossible! Last time i was in Eclipse they had that #f8# thing or wotever it is but i didnt have the cash to buy it

Besides Sigur Ros r better, speakin of which i was in glasgow a few weeks ago & they started playin Sigur Ros in Forbidden Planet! Wow, i thot. i went up to the counter after the song Frugulfrahen and sed to the guy "good choice in music mate, this album is stunning" You know wot his reply was? Well ill tell u, he sed "ach, i feel lik slittin ma wrists! its so fuckin depressin!" Tosser. Needless to say i walked out without buyin the intended Homer Simpson action figure and have never since entered that shop!

i just checked out a Top 10 Post Rock Albums list on Amazon.co.uk, the guy had Sigur Ros as number 1 with the comment "u cannot call urself a fan of post rock until uve tried to have sex with this album!" Ok then, still it is a very fantastic album, deserves to be number 1 in a list like that anyway, altho whether id have sex with it is a different matter

You've named some good bands, (and some shitty, shitty ones...sorry - we all have opinions, even if they're wrong), but as a DJ I'd just like to point out
that I've played stuff off both Highway 61 Revisited and Subt. Homesick Blues (or Bringing It All Back Home, as the album was originally called), regularly play tracks by the Pixies, Velvet Underground and Primal Scream (albeit mainly from Vanishing Point, Give Out But Don't Give Up and XTRMNTR), have heard Eels at Rocksoc a fair few times (as I think Chris mentioned, to be fair), Incubus get played fairly regularly, and I'm pretty sure I've heard a bit of Idlewild and ...AYWKUBTTOD as well.

Blood on the Tracks is an amazing album, one of my all-time favourites, etc. etc. but I'd rather chew my own arm off than dance to a single song off it at Rocksoc. Time, place, etc. Same goes for Screamadelica, anything by Air(who are occasionally capable of sounding like a fine band, you're right), and pretty much any song that lasts for more than 9-10 minutes unless it's by Neil Young and Crazy Horse (hey, we all have our weaknesses). Anyway, some of Iron Maiden's longer cuts get put on fairly regularly too, although I'm not sure if that's relevant, I was just told to mention it.

Some things just don't work on a dance floor unless you actually want it to be empty for huge stretches of time. Perhaps you could try putting pressure on AltSoc...By the sound of things you haven't been to Rocksoc that many times, so perhaps you should give it a try before telling people what gets played and what doesn't. Ach, go on...go on, go on go on. You might even like it there...

ive been at every Rocksoc for the past yr & ive NEVER heard Trail Of Dead, Pixies or Eels or almost any of the bands ive put in that list. If i had i would have noticed, these r some of my favourite bands. The list is music i would like to hear at Rocksoc but i dont expect to be played so i titled the list Music Which Will Never Be Played At Rocksoc. i went to the AltMusSoc a couple of times but it was really shit! all i can remember them playin was the Strokes and White Stripes.

Anyway on a lighter note i take back everythin negative i said about Deftones White Pony, i gave it a few good listens 2day and i really like it.

Apart from that ive mostly been listenin to Therapys Troublegum, what a great album!! And yes i know Knives and Screamager have been played at Rocksoc b4 any1 says, i myself have thrown myself about the floor to the lines "Im gonna get drunk, come round and fuck u up!" as any1 with the right mind would

The list "Good music which will never be played at Rocksoc" is NOT a condemnation of the Rocksoc djs, if it was the list would have been called "Good music which will never be played at Rocksoc because the djs have no idea wot good music and they all rape mules and other vulnerable livestock while thinking about what music to play at the next Rocksoc etc etc etc"

I guess it would have made things clearer if i had called the list "Good music which will never be played at Rocksoc because it is in no way suitable to mosh to and should therefore be listened to at other more appropriate times outwith the wonderful night that is Rocksoc"

The only reasons either of my lists were made is
a) i was bored.
b) there are lots of other types of music out there besides metal.
c) i beleive i own some quite fantastic cds which i think a lot of people would enjoy.

To tell the truth i know Incubus r played at Rocksoc, ive heard them a few times, the only reason they r on that list is bcos i ran out of other ideas for bands!

I have Primal Scream but only Rocks, hence why i put Screamadelca on the list

Look cloud, as both me and the erstwhile and knowledgable Mr Patterson pointed out, eels have been played at Rocksoc in the past year. Sim played 'Novocaine for the Soul' during one of the Venue 1 disco's we had and also played either that or 'Lucky Day in Hell' once at one of the upstairs discos.
So, considering that point and the fact that Mark says he did play Dylan, Velvet Underground and the Pixies, what with him being the actual DJ here I think I'll take his word over yours.

And no matter how adamant (now there's someone who doesn't get played enough a Rocksoc) and self inflated you want to get, you'll forgive me if I don't believe a word you say. So if you don't mind can you stop being so feckin' bolshy when we know for a fact you happen to be wrong in these cases.

Rocksoc as a society has always been, and will always be, divided over what music should and shouldn't get played at Rocksoc. Your opinions are not going to change this. I would love to here many things get played, and even on the commitee had no influence over whether they did or not.

Ask a DJ, one you think will agree to play it. Or stand for DJ trials next year and spare us pointless arguments which degenerate into finger-pointing and name-calling.
