I've been nuts about motorbikes for as long as I can remember and I'm desperate to learn and buy one... only thing is, I dont want to die.

Anyone have any facts/opinions on exactly how dangerous they are? Good idea?

I owned one for awhile in Los Angeles. They are fun as hell and if you know what your are doing, and are not interested in taking risks, they can be safe. But you must remember everyone must go down, that is if you are riding long enough. I went down a number of times luckily they were not serious. Good luck.

The thing to watch for when you're riding a bike is cars. My driving instructor likes his bike, and he says that most accidents are caused by cars. I'm not speaking from experience on this subject, but my dad used to ride a bike, and he says that they are really uncomfortable.

Of course a lot of it depends on the power of the bike and so on, but my driving instructor at least, would hit 140mph in third gear down the dual-carraigeway.

So my advice is get one but watch out for cars, because most car drivers do not know anything about riding a bike, and they can be real jerks to you on the road, because they think you're doing something dangerous when you're not.

Fuck Off. most accidents are caused by bikes assuming a car has seen them when they haven't. now if I am going 70 down the dual carriageway and see there is nothing behind my for 400m, I assume there will be nothing behind me for at least 60s. I will probably check every 20. Now if your lovely driving instructor is going 140 then he will reach me in about 13 seconds. And he still expects me to know he is there. trust me it is scary to pull out into what you think is thin air to see a bike charge out of it. It scares me to know that I almost killed someone, and I check my mirrors more than most. We mostly ain't jerks. we're just human so stop assuming that we aint gonna fuck up.
