Tuition fees for English students in 4th year

Postby maenad on Wed May 21, 2008 10:44 pm

I started my course in 2005, so am going into my fourth and final year. When I applied I was under the impression that English students doing four year courses in Scotland which would be three years in England would not have to pay tuition fees for their final year.

I asked at reception and they said to contact my LEA - do I just ring them up? Is there an official way to do it? The internet has been unhelpful so far and I'm envisioning this being difficult. I've seen no reminders about this (I got the impression that the uni wants nothing to do with it, and my LEA haven't contacted me), so do they just keep quiet and hope that students will pay up?

as far as I can remember it's done automatically...they are paid, but it's better to contact your LEA for the official verdict :-)

unless you changed your course when you got here. so if you were accepted for english and then changed to something else, for instance, then they don't pay.

I'm in the same situation, and was wondering the same thing.

That reminds me; I still need to contact my LEA.

I disagree with you in principle.
Now some people weren't happy about the content of that last post. And we can't have someone not happy. Not on the internet.

don't know about taking time out. think it's just a problem if you change your course. that's what the finance people at student support told me.

I had to contact my LEA and fill out something extra in a new loans application form, then take the letter they sent me with me to matriculation.
They certainly didn't volunteer anything!
On the other hand I don't think the Uni demanded to see the letter at matriculation, I think they just took my word for it...

I changed my course from Englih with Linguistics to just English, and I got my SLC letter confirming that my tuition is free. I didn't contact my LEA and neither did my flatmate who is in the same fortunate situation.

Perhaps Kent LEA is actually good for something after all!

Student Academic Administration is the part of Registry that deals with fees, so you could try contacting them (saa.registry@st-and.ac.uk).

Well, I called my LEA (North Tyneside) and after speaking to two people who didn't even get what I was on about I was put through to the education department (good move, guys!) and told that I just apply for my loan as usual. The SLC then assesses whether I get my fees paid or not (the bit she stressed was there being an equivalent course in England which is three years), and send me a letter. So I'll see how that goes for a start.

I got this for this year, but it was a ridiculously convoluted process (though I'm sure that my LEA being Westminster had something to do with it). It wasn't, as I was assured, included automatically in my loan application. I asked the SLC, who said phone your LEA, who said phone the SLC, etc, etc.

If I remember correctly, the Uni needs to send a letter to your LEA (the Uni is quite used to these requests and were fairly efficient when I asked), who clears it with the SLC to give you your money. So you have to (I think) have some history with the SLC/applied for some type of loan with them.

Piece of advice: if in your quest the SLC or the LEA says there is nothing in your file about requesting the final year concession even though you've spoken to one or both of them before, tell them someone 'put a note in your file'. This - some how - enables them to see all your past requests, as well as what every previous Rep said to you.
