So . . you're happy to support child slavery?

God I love Nestlé.

Agreed. Nothing makes me feel warmer inside than a good toffee crisp.

Child Slavery? Nestle have improved, don't keep flogging a dead horse mate. I think that the status of "Fairtrade Uni" reflects more on the effort people have put in to encouraging and promoting the sales of fairtrade. I don't agree with fairtrade but i can still reconize that a lot of people have put in great effort and determination for this.

Toffee Crisps are sweet though, and nestle makes some fine sweets. Just cause u eat a chocolate bar doesn't mean u support child slavery though.

Um, it's an old issue, not a dead issue. While there is an initiative running with Cadbury-Schweppes to 'deal' with it, there's also the problem of children taken out of/prevented from attending schools by poor families for cocoa production. It's a problem not just with cocoa but also palm oil in the chocolate.

[edit] the 'I love Nestle' and 'ooh I get glowy feeling' annoyed me. Nestle's unethical behaviour (relating to many issues) is hardly inducive of a 'glow'.

Clearly you dont agree with the principles of fairtrade otherwise you would recognise that the contribution the university makes in terms of sheer numbers is important...all tea and coffee in the halls is fairtrade...that makes a whole lot more fairtrade products being sold in st.andrews than if the halls werent told to use fairtrade.

also its a matter of consumer pressure - the fact that one of the most traditional (and conservative) university has done all the work necesary get fairtrade status gives the message that people care about Trade Justice.
Fairtrade is just one part of the Trade justice movement - and getting rid of the CAP is part of the trade justice campaign.
We are thinking of starting a Trade Justice campaign, if you would like to join feel free to email gr43 and i can sign you right up.

And yeah boycotting french goods would rock...when do you wanna start? Its not quite as easy, as 'oooh i have an idea...', you actually have to do it, and getting Fairtrade Status is something we have done. What have you done?

So we've changed our choice of tea and biscuits, then announced that we've done so, and promised to change our choice of cake when we can.

Pathetic.

For once I'd like to see these 'student activists' campaigning for something that would make a real difference to the 3rd world, like abolishing EU trade barriers.

How about a university boycott of french goods whilst their government continues to defend CAP. The abolition of which would do more at a stroke then fair trade will ever do.

Damn I hate the internet.

Either

A) You didn't get the very obvious humour in my post

or

B) I am now not getting the obvious reverse humour in your post

:S

I think we should start using humour tags

How does the fairtrade university propose to supply fairtrade versions of products such as Irn Bru, Tennents Lager and water?

Considering the Union's been mostly fair trade for years, it's really just that fair trade tea and coffee will be offered at University meetings that will be different.

Out of interest, what is this fairtrade steering group? I haven't heard about it.

My SRC Environment & Ethics Committee took on that role.

So, in real terms, what changes shall we be seeing to our university experience?

Will hall meals now use fair trade ingredients (instead of grade F reclaimed meat by-product: now with extra testicles)

Did you read my post on the 'infrastructure pineapples' thread (or was it the other one about Fairtrade?)? Because that's exactly what I said! Either way, I suspect great minds think alike ;)

Hey, reading the thread down a bit further, would you guys seriously be up for a boycott of French goods based on their government's support for the CAP? 'Cause I'd LOVE to get the ball rolling on that one!

Is Beaton's milk fairtrade? I for one think our dairy farmers are deserving of a few extra pence on a litre of milk, I take it the fairtrade campaign is fighting to ensure local sourcing of products that can be locally sourced and that the farmers are paid a fair price?

errrr, Fairtrade is about third world suppliers... so unless you're saying Scotland should be considered a third world country, then...no.
