Have worked in a bar, Have turned people away. Did not have a smile on my face while doing it.

As a member of staff at Alldays i would like to say first, to anyone who was so rude to generalise the fact that all the staff there are idiots are totally out of order - i wouldnt be doing my masters degree here if i was stupid!

We as members of staff have been told not only by our manager but by the police, that we have to tighten up on positive identification.

I myself was used as an internal test across many shops around fife and a lot of shops failed and got fined - two people lost their jobs!! I really dont think some of you realise the c**p that we have to deal with from some customers - is it our fault that we follow shop policies. I am here to get my degree not a criminal record which is what i can get if i sell an age related item to someone underage. Plus a disiplinary from my work and could face the sack!

The over 21 rule is there to protect me as a member of staff and i will say if you dont like the rule go somewhere else, but dont be so hypicritical when there is nowhere else in st-andrews open to come back.

I am probably sure that when you were 16 you went out into bars and got served for alcohol and thats because it can be really hard to tell someones age, hence the 21 rule is there as a precaution to make sure i wont ever slip up!

When multiple people come up to the till with alcohol they will all be asked to present ID that is what our company policy states and thats what we do.

No matriculation cards are accepted in our shops across the country and to that we have to adhire too, we do accept provisionals and many other forms of ID, if you want alcohol/tobacco bring ID its simple.

I would like to present a question to all those of you who did complain - have you ever worked in a job selling age related items, i am pritty sure the answer will be no. If you have ever been subjected to the abuse that i have gotten for simply doing my job, you wouldnt complain!

Work in a restaurant, check ID all the time. Never had to turn people away, but I'd rather put up an occasional fuss than the trouble I'd find myself in if I didn't and they were underage.

You misunderstand. The problem is not that people don't have ID. The problem is that people are presenting Provisional Drivers lisences and being refused service.

It's not just alldays. Bottoms up do it. As do Greyfriars. I give neither of them my custom as a result!

And for your information, i've worked in a bar. Pretty age related if ytou ask me!

Bottoms Up are a joke, I went in there to buy some booze and they then asked my flatmate for ID even though I was the one buying the alcohol.

The Chap

Postby The chap on Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:11 am

I've been served by one member of staff there for lottery without being questioned and on a different occasion asked for I.D by the stupid bird.
The policy is so bloody silly. She claims they will ask ANYBODY OF ANY AGE for I.D when they are buying anything that requires proof of age. That means the elderly.
For fuck sake.
I simply refuse to go in there again. I don't need an idiot on a power trip annoying me and I'm certainly not going to start carrying I.D at my age.
(Furthermore, for those who can be bothered reading this far...I saw her once turn an old woman away who was buying a wee bottle of brandy for her mother. Why? Because she said..."I'm pretty sure that's the one she likes"
"Who?"
"My mother."
"Your mother?"
"Yes."
"I'm sorry, but I can't sell you this."
"Why?"
"It's for someone else."
Silly and gradually more insulting exchange takes place and the old lady walks out vowing to never go back again. Quite right too).

I went into Bottoms Up with four items of photo ID with my DOB:

1. My Army ID card ( this is called a MOD form 90, clear-large photo, DOB, army number, hologram. Rather tricky to fake.)
2. Matric card
3. Provisional
4. HM Forces railcard and photocard

Unsurprisingly the IDs all had my name on them - all the photos were obviously of me, they also all happened to be reasonably recent and surprise, surprise, all the DOBs were the same and showed that I was over 18.

I was refused service (buying a bottle of champagne, hardly indicative of imminent hardcore underage alcohol abuse)
I asked the guy behind the counter if he had any doubt in his mind that I was 19.

Answer: "no: but I still cannot serve anyone unless they have a full driving license or passport"

The guy who I went into the shop with then tried to buy two bottles of Magners using his full license and was refused service on the grounds that he was with me and I did not have ID

How emotive. Really, you truly plucked at my heartstrings.

If you can spare a moment to clamber down from your high horse, take a second to realise that most people are criticising the (quite frankly ridiculous) over 21 policy applying to EVERYTHING and not just alcohol related products.

And please please explain the moronic logic that your co-worker applied to the situation that first inspired/enraged me enough to create this thread: "I know you're over 16 but you don't look over 21, so I'm not going to sell you these cigarettes afterall."

What a fucking joke. I hate the bloody place anyway - the staff (apart from one fairly nice chap with stubble and a small lady (not the one with glasses though) who always tries to get me to sign up for a co-op loyalty card) have always been hateful bastards, and the stuff is scandalously more expensive than anywhere else.

EDIT: Oh, and I too have worked in a small newsagents/convenience store as well as a bar, so I ID'ed people fairly regularly. But NEVER did I ever do it just for the sake of being a Mini Hitler on a pathetic power trip. I severely doubt the same can be said for a few of the staff in Alldays.

the people who work in Alldays are complete scummers who seem never to wash. They also don't take too kindly to students. I've been behind locals in the queue who have excellent banter and get a generally friendly response from the staff, then it comes to me Mr Student and it's the same monosyallabic grunt.

Hum, for some reason, the only place that I seem to get ID'd anymore is Co'op. In fact, tho the best of my memory I have never been ID'd anywhere else. This does not worry overly much, as I normally carry my driving licence on me at all times (being a driver), and I am quite often glad for those times when I have left it at home, as it reminds me that I have done so!! Having worked in supermarkets (Urghh), I know the difficulties staff face in asking for ID, in my experience it can be very embaressing and intimidating to do so. I do fully support any staff who ask for ID, and grin quite cheerfully at them as I give it to them (which probably scares them witless :D).

When applying for a provisional driver's license you are asked by the Post Office/DVLA to prove your identity, generally with a passport. They then approve and issue the license. When you pass your test, the license is sent off, updated to a full license and re-issued, yet this time you don't need to prove your identity. So the whole full license being acceptable and a provisional not is a whole load of red tape.

Being a driver I don't have a problem, but it must be so hard for those who are not. Honestly, who is stupid enough to carry their passport on them all the time? And we're not buying nuclear weapons here, just drink, tobacco and lottery tickets.

I now refuse to shop anywhere that stringently asks for ID for anything. I'd much rather support local, non-quartz-brained businesses, whoa re generally more laid back, than the faceless, corporate outlets.

And you know what it'll be next? They'll want everyone to get implants in their arms which have electronic identification proof on them. Something which I will most certainly not partake in. You think its a joke, just wait a few years...

At home in Warrington, I was asked for ID in a certain (nameless) store the other week when buying a teaspoon. Apparantly they cannot sell them to under 16s. It was a blummin teaspoon and I am 22 - all I was going to do was eat my chocolate mousse with it.

Anyhow he saw that I had my Local Govt Identity badge on and swiftly changed his mind about the ID. (I still could have been under 16!)

Anyone else been asked for ID in stores (aside from alldays) for absolutely ridiculous items? Or do shops reserve their stupidity for me?

Tell them what for

Postby Malcolm on Mon Oct 30, 2006 1:51 pm

If you're all that bothered (I'm not, I don't mind walking the extra distance to Tesco), then write to the Co-op head office and complain about the St Andrews store deliberately targeting students like that. Explain to them that the students form about 1/3 of the town's population and have no qualms about going elsewhere, so it'll be Alldays that loses out financially.

It might help, you never know.

I don't have an address for them, though.

My flatmate ID'd me in Tesco when I was buying Quorn, he thinks it should be a restricted product.

Birthdays: we went in one Hallowe'en... probably clanking from all the alcohol we had just bought in Tesco (without being ID'd) and the bitch behind the counter, who looked about 14 herself, ID's us to make sure we are over 16...

For some reason, people have stopped IDing me to make sure I am over 18, but insist on IDing me to make sure I'm over 16.
