Why are so many people voting for the Conservatives on the poll?

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

And how many of you can actually vote in hte Scottish elections anyway?

Every EU citizen who's registered to do so, I'd have thought. Or would you like to limit it only to Scots?

Only those with pure Scottish ancestry, recorded for at least 3 generations, shall be citizens.

I would, but I find you to be just as annoying as him.
And that's saying something, since he's clearly gone out of his way to be the most on that front.

Senethro, you're voting Lib Dem? And you always seemed such a nice boy. I thought you were actually in any way left wing?

I am definitely voting, it would take a major problem for me not to vote.

And I am happy to announce I will be voting Socialist-ish, (not actually certain who I have to vote for yet, as I am still registered back at home and have not had a chance to find out who the candidates in my area are).

Vote Scottish Conservative on May 3rd.

We've had a lot of SNP related talk, and I thought it was about time that the party addressing real issues facing real people every day in Scotland should have a mention again.

The Scottish Conservatives.

God, thats got to be up there in the list of funniest posts on this thread.

Aside from not representing real people, how do you intend to address any issues when you wont get many sets and when you refuse to form a coalition with anyone (well, not that you'd have much choice anyway).

One real issue that is affecting the students in St Andrews is the HMO situation - both the Tory council candidate (who probably will get in) and the Labour one have said that they'd cut down the number of HMO's and further regulate them. I wonder how many votes the tories would have got on the poll if the students had seen their council manifesto.

I'm sorry to say that I've become apathetic with regard to the political parties Marco. My single issue is now proportional representation in the UK and I see a hung Westminster parlaiment with a healthily sized LibDem party as the best way to achieve that.

I just read the Conservative manifesto for Scotland- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/p ... ifesto.pdf perhaps that is one if the reasons so many will be voting for them, they actually have some sensible policies such as:

Increasing grants for households and businesses to install solar and wind-power generators plus added investment in green technology research.

1/2 price council tax for OAPs

Improving help for small and medium businesses. These represent the vital part of any economy and therefore improving them will make the whole economy better.

Vital help for rural Scotland- it is great to hear a party supporting the rural issues, normally it is the big cities that get all the attention because it is easy to win voters in a highly populated area, meanwhile those in the countryside suffer. The Conservatives have always promoted the country issues and I applaud them for this.

I think the minefesto is great, but I think it reeks of a party that knows it will not be a major player and as such can say whatever it wants.

For example, I think :

Conservatives will give them reason to feel more secure. A larger
police presence cuts crime. At present, there are a mere 147 police
officers on the beat at any one time, throughout the whole of Scotland.
So we will hire 1,500 more police officers. But we don’t want them
sitting behind a desk filling out forms. We want them in our
neighbourhoods providing reassurance, sharing information, gathering
intelligence to deter and detect crime, and making our streets safer.
To help this, Conservatives will work with Chief Constables to
eliminate the red tape and bureaucracy
which inhibits the delivery of
justice. Residents will be encouraged to play their part too. We want
to see communities with thriving Neighbourhood Watch schemes,
where residents meet regularly to discuss developments. This is social
responsibility in action, and we believe that it will herald a new era of
civic confidence.

Is a direct contradiction to:

Social responsibility will be complemented by police accountability.
Under our system local police will be expected to publish regular crime
statistics
, community by community, so that residents can see for
themselves whether crime is going up or down. And if residents are
unhappy with police performance, they will have a right to do
something about it, because the Convenors of each Police Board will
have to stand for election. If the Convenor is not doing his or her job
well enough, he or she will lose

Can you imagine if David Cameron was our leader and he was in charge of our front line. If he had it his way, our army would go fighting armed with a silver spoon and bottle of pimms, with a popped collar as a means of body armour...
