The State of the world today...

Postby James01 on Wed Jun 11, 2008 9:42 pm

Hi people,

In an attempt to start an intelligent discussion on the sinner (doomed from the start I know... but I'll give it a go anyway!) I wanted to ask you what you think of the state of the world today.

Gordon Brown has managed to get through his 42-day detention without charge bill by the slimiest of slim margins, NATO forces have killed 9 Pakistani Soldiers with a rogue missile strike, Oil is $139 a barrel which is causing people to protest in the street and recession to loom and yet we sit hear in our cozy little sea-side town mostly unaffected by it all.

Do real world issues penetrate the bubble? What do you guys think of the world at this moment?

Personally I think that all of this has the potential to be quite depressing... but for some reason it hasn't yet become so. I have spent this evening talking to two of my little cousins (aged 13/14) who were telling me about their coursework at school and the girls/boys they like and it made me think that no matter how crappy things get in the world there is always the smallest of thoughts or conversations that can suddenly make everything seem worthwhile?

Am I crazy or does talking to a child suddenly make everything else make sense?

Sorry for rambling, but I would like to hear what your thoughts are.

Hi people,

NATO forces have killed 9 Pakistani Soldiers with a rogue missile strike

That isn't true. There are two forces operating in Afghanistan, the U.S. military and NATO.

NATO is on a peacekeeping role, the U.S. aims to destroy the Taliban/terrists.

The U.S. have claimed responsibility for the strike, NATO have denied responsibility.

Also - the strike wasn't a rogue one, it was deliberate. They killed taliban fighters as well as Pakistani soldiers. It was a deliberate strike with unforseen casualties.

As for the question - I think the world is probably nicer now than it has been in the past. We've always had war/famine/hatred/persecution. My guess is that people thinking its bad right now is due to the global reach and in depth coverage available to the news in the digital age.

I think you answered your own question there...

Well, the economy is screwed at the moment and its going to get a lot worse before it gets better. We are facing a triple whammy of high food prices, high oil prices and the credit crunch which has annihalated the profits of the banking sector and is starting to have a major impact on the housing market. In the words of one of our partners who is in the know 'the market is f**ked'. If oil reaches $200 dollars a barrel the country is going to slide into recession. The good times are suspended i'm afraid and its now just a case of riding out the storm until its over.

It's pretty neat, isn't it all. I mean: it could be worse. Things will get worse, but other things'll get better too, I'm sure.

The weather could be a little nicer too.
