I think that the name bop is just too engrained in the student consciousness for the word bop to fade away anytime soon and certainly far superior to any of the contrived names that they've come up with.
I dont think that anyone is trying to make the word 'bop' disappear or fade away. I think we should hang on to these words as much as we can, they are a part of st andrews history. McIntosh Hall is called chattan by lots of people, JBH is called atholl etc etc.. But the fact is, what goes on in the union on a friday night not a 'bop'.
The 'bop' started as a weekly event in old union (where the old union diner is). One of my father's friends (now in his late 60's) used to attend regually. From what i can make out, there was no special lighting and the sound was aufull.
What we have in union theatre today is probably the most sophisticated set of club lights in fife. With a sound system to match.
Although a new name might seem 'contrived' I think it is necessary to make the distiction between that original, poorly lit, badly sounding dance and today's friday night event that uses a setup, costing £100,000s
