It's always interesting to hear views that basically suggestt that workers anyhere are paid to do a job and therefore somehow not in a position to comment or criticise as to how their (presumed) betters behave. From my standpoint, we essentially buy skills and effort when we pay members of staff to work for us. We don't buy them - we buy those skills. In the same respect as we all buy the skills of a surgeon a dentist or a bricklayer. Strange how the notion can suddenly change when put in that context. Subsitute "surgeon" for "bar staff" and then use phrases like "I am paying you to do this, don't tell me what you think is best. Just do what I tell you to do and don't argue back.".

In that respect, it's one of the biggest problems we still have in this country. This notion that somehow there are those who are our servants. And others in whom we stand in awe of. Only problem is I don't tend to make the distinction. Which is why I would hope that we treat all members of staff with the required amount of respect and patience when they get it wrong. And protection from those who somehow feel in a position to abuse them because they only "servants" being paid to do a job.

All we can ever ask for is that sort of understanding across the board. When I train people and advise them on how to do the job right, I do expect them to learn and go with it. And at the same time, others to understand that what they are doing can be immensely hard work, taxing.....and skilled. Pint pullers are ten a penny. Real, good bar staff, people who can handle situations that their peers wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of coping with are few and far between. They are properly professional in that way but one of the most underrated of professions. And for that reason deserve the respect that we give them. And also the respect that I expect they be given from those who come to see us and are hopefully treated properly in their own right.

We're not asking that you fuckwit! We just ask for some courtesy and for you idiots not to hold up service by being twats! We maybe do work to keep you lot happy, but we are still human... u should try working a busy night in the union, and you would see how hard we work for VERY little thanks and a basic wage

1/ i have only ever given courtesy to the union staff, as I have said many times on this thread I do actually respect the hard work they do.
2/ i don't hold up the service, it's the last thing on my agenda when i'm out for a night in the union. I've drunk in there long enough to know the places to stand to get served and where not to stand if i dont want to get in the way.
3/ i know you are human and work hard, but so am I, I work for very little wages and absolutely no thanks too, and also pay tax and council tax, so please don't patronise me with the "poor student, crap wage" spiel.
4/ i have worked in the "service" sector before, and it seems it was a different one, as we were always taught to respect our customers, try and pander to their every need, help them as much as possible, and if we had a problem, to keep it to ourselves.

I pissed off members of the bar staff last night. And most of the town as well, come to think of it....

I tried thinking of an innovative witty remark, but could only come up with this...

If you dont like it, quit you moaning barstards.

If any member of staff in a normal bar started putting up gay little messages, whining about how customers are such an inconvenience and how could we all make way or I'm going to cry they would be fired!

This is a bloody bar in which the customer is supposed to be served and looked after - who cares about you? If you quit then there are 10 students who would be ready to fill your shoes to pick up that wage you grip about.

You know what the union is like; one of the busiest pubs in St Andrews in which people drinking and having a good time are naturally going to be quite close to the toe rags serving the drinks.

Get over it you bloody losers. Bar staff across the world can cope with it why can't the gimps in the cool shirts in the union do it too?

well, last night we had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with someone who wouldn't drink up, at 25 past 1,

He was just trying to be annoying, he was asked several times politely to finish the drink and leave, he deliberatly did neither, and continued to argue, he was quite clearly breaking the law, and endagering our licence, which would not be welcomed by other sensible patrons, this selfishness is silly. when he got abusive we just gritted our teeth, . I can't remember what happened but one of the superior members of staff dealt with the situation and he was promptly removed from the building minus his pint.

i'm not saying its unexpected, but i for would like some ounce of respect from people, we are merely doing our job, for very little money, and we aren't there to take abuse from the public, merely to serve you alcohol and ensure you have a good night.

The majority of people are fine, and resonable, the actions of the few however bring me great sadness. their actions always seem almost inhuman

sorry for the poor punctuation and spelling, too tired, ill and bored to care.
