I am not intending to pass judgement, I've just heard from a variety of sources that it is a drinkfest that is not really worth the money. Being someone who doesn't like to drink myself silly, I would much rather spend that kind of money on something else.

I queued for about half an hour in 2004 and I only got 2 doubles. And it was cold, muddy, overcrowded and lacking in places to sit. The toilets were few in number and disgusting in quality.

Did you go VIP? If not, that probably explains why. We got troughs of booze with usually less than one minute wait time, comfy sofas, etc. It was fantastic. 2005 was clearly about twice as busy as the place was meant to take. I don't think there's ever anything wrong with the organisation - they just admit far too many people.

Well that just says it all really! "Twice the value," it seems means reducing the quality of a standard fare in favour of a blowing money on a nice tent.

Also, what's this I hear about the ball not going ahead this year?

In that case you are in much the same boat as me. A few drinks won't cost me £100, that's for sure. I'd have to be assured I was getting more value for money.

You hear wrong. Take a look at www.charitymayball.com or read the article in The Saint. They both confirm its existence in this year's crowded ball lineup.

I think it costs ten pounds more to get the VIP ticket.

How do you know that?

I, personally, think that a VIP ticket costing only ten pounds more than a regular ticket is absurd. Why bother at all? - all that will happen, is everyone will go VIP, thus rendering no one very important at all. The fashion-show has made this mistake in the past and it serves to make the VIP's less exclusive, and ulitmatly resent the fact that they've paid any extra in the first place.

Not exactly.

The idea with VIP is that you get the ticket early and shell out for it while everyone else is still 'thinking about it' and twiddling their thumbs. Then, they sell out of VIP, leaving only pleb tickets for unlucky hoi polloi who were reluctant to whip it out and cough up in the first place.

The advantage of VIP at the may ball is that you get more indoor space per-head, since there are only 300 of you and they slap up a bunch of marquees for your benefit. Nuff said.

Indeed, this fabled VIP ticket seems to merit its value simply for the self-aggrandisement which it affords the holder. Come on peasants, prove you aren't peasants and pay us extra!

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the KK guy who told me it was ten pounds extra said that you get a priority bar where it's supposed to be less busy. If you get a lot of drinks (they're free), a VIP ticket sounds like it's worth it.

Quoting god_hand from 01:41, 2nd Mar 2007
Meh and meh! VIP tickets or no, I'm not holding out much hope for the May ball. If the opening one was anything to go by the KK would be hard-pressed to organise an orgy in a brothel!

Let us not allow this subject to degenerate in to an anti KK thread.

I think the 2004 Mayball was outstanding so I think its fair to say it is possible to hold hope. The opening Ball has nothing on the May ball so don't let that dissuade you from going.

I think they can keep the ticket prices high, as long as the evening merits it. VIP should be more than just shorter queues, and htose who have normal tickets should be able to get to a bar easily.

Most of my friends - certinaly all of my flatmates - can afford atleast £120 for VIP, and they are important people, so deserve their place, however I do feel there should be some level (proportiante) of enjoyment for the lesser mortals also attending.

Yeah the poorer folk should be able to have fun too. All my flatmates can defo afford £400 for a VIP ticket. So maybe that should be the price?

It doesn't matter if you've got £120 to waste in your back burner and you feel the need to shout about it, that doesn't make you important. It is very unbecoming to a Gentleman to flaunt his (or his Daddy's) wealth, shows absolutely no decorum. One day you shall find out that it just makes people think you are a prick.

KK demands?

I heard that the KK *told* them not to talk about the may ball yet. Apparently they said they would 'let them know' when they wanted it discussed. Bet the saint wasn't too impressed judging by the fact they printed it.

Is it just me or do people on the sinner have a chip on their shoulder about what they can and cannot afford? On one side you have "poor" people having a go at others just because they don't want to pay extra for a VIP ticket, and on the other you have wealthier people telling others that they are just tight-wads!

From what I've heard, the VIP ticket isn't much more, and it's up to you whether or not you get one. You can have a good time with either, just don't have a go at the system if you don't value the VIP ticket as much as others!

Well, I went to the New Hall Ball on Saturday and it was legendary. It was second to the May Ball this year in terms of size, with 1400 tickets. And the best thing about it was that I (among other non-New Hall inmates) got in for free!

The quality of the performances was great. The only compromising factor was that you had to pay for drinks, but at least everyone wasn't shitfaced and it was a fun night. And it was free! Did I already say that? ;-)

What I've seen here is a discussion on price vs value for money. And given that there doesn't seem to be much of one, the issue of getting a VIP ticket for...hmm..conspicuous consumption.

Price = value for money. Hah! That made me giggle I could have went on a night out in a pretty dress, not got muddy and cold and crushed, could have got nicely drunk for about 20 pounds and had a much better time than I did for my 75 pounds at the may ball last year.

I wouldn't mind the price if I considered the occasion to justify it. But I would much rather just give the 55 pounds left over from my night out directly to the charity of my choice than hand it over to the KK again.

I don't like the farm for a venue. A nice hotel reception would be much nicer. Call me old fashioned if you will but my idea of a ball is pretty people dancing and socialising. Not being unable to think over the noise of goldie looking chain, being cold and jostled in the crowd by people at the point of being leggless. There are far too many people admitted. For the price of even the pleb ticket it just doesnt cut the mustard.

I want to go back in time to a place where such things were civilised affairs.

Or, if you follow my friends Opening Ball logic, neck it in front of them.

I'm still undecided. Having never been to a May Ball (or indeed an Opening Ball) in my previous 3 years here, I had decided that this year would be the one I would go to everything. I went to the Opening Ball and didn't have that great a time and felt it was a waste of my money. I always said I would go to the May Ball and get the VIP ticket and totally splash out, but when I heard rumours that it wasn't on and thus was happy not to go and not to have to fork out loads of money.
But now that I know it's back on, I'm not sure I want to go anymore. I have a feeling I'll put too much pressure on it and end up not enjoying myself, but at the same time do I really want to miss out on going? I've heard such mixed reviews, and part of me wants to go so I can make up my own mind, but I'm not sure I want to fork out loads of money for it.
Wow. None of you really wanted to hear that, did you?
