Jobs

Postby Derya on Fri Jan 28, 2005 7:22 pm

Hey,
I was just wondering how much the average pay for student jobs is up there? Just to help me figure out whether I can afford to live in DRA or have to go to Fife Park (after reading how terrible it is there...!!*g*)
Thanks :)

You'll be lucky to get more than the minimum wage which is £4.85/hr as far as I'm aware (well that's what I earn). So obviously what you can earn depends on how many hours you put in. So to afford DRA you'll probably need to work full-time which doesn't leave much time for the whole study/drink/recover cycle to play out.

I think that minimum wage is lower if you're under 21 - it might be as low as 4 pounds 11 pence (sorry, American keyboard), but I can't remember.

I think it also depends on what sector you are employed in, if you get a job which counts as agricultural labour, eg in a garden centre/nursery then it is more. Saying that I don't think theres anywhere like that around St Andrews but I might be wrong.

That was increased from October 2004.

Here are the current rates from: http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/nmw/

The National Minimum Wage has increased

The National Minimum Wage rates increased on 1 October 2004.

Main (adult) rate for workers aged 22 and over

£4.85 per hour from 1 October 2004 (an increase from £4.50 an hour)

Development rate for workers aged 18-21 inclusive

£4.10 per hour from 1 October 2004 (an increase from £3.80 an hour)

NB: The development rate can also apply to workers aged 22 and above during their first 6 months in a new job with a new employer and who are receiving accredited training.

A new rate for 16 and 17 year olds

The Government has accepted the Low Pay Commission's recommendations for a new rate for 16 and 17 year olds (above compulsory school leaving age).*

£3.00 per hour from 1 October 2004

NB: 16 and 17 year old apprentices will be exempt from the new young workers rate.

When looking for a job, you can always do I Google. I just did one for [jobs part-time "st andrews"] and came up with some interesting items.

There is also http://www.justjobs4students.co.uk/

Hey there!

Fife Park isn't as bad as people make it out to be; it's more about the most you make of your time there - cheesy or what?! It's cheap and cheerful but if you expect the earth for 45 quid a week prepare to be disappointed!

The average wage is usually about £4.50 an hour and it depends where you work as to how many hours you can clock up per week!

Hope that helps,
L

you'll find if you work at the Union, it's practically one of the worst paid places in town @ £4.25 an hour, and not only that you can work for 3 nights and still be working less than 15 hours which translates to less than £50 for 3 late nights of hard work- and not to mention the loss of sleep if you've got 9ams the next day because don't expect to get home til 2am.

In short, don't work at the union.

What's the job market like? Due to a gross miscalculation on my part I'm going to have to get a job, go cap in hand to the Union for money or declare bankruptcy, none of which are very attractive.
