Resiting MT2001

Postby househunter on Sat Jun 25, 2005 5:55 pm

I have been told in order to take honours maths I need to take an unofficial resit of MT2001 and achieve an 11 or better (I got a 7).
The school isn't really communicating with me and I really want to get my head down and make a start revising. Does anyone have the notes or books or any useful infomation for this course?
Thanks

I'd recommend using any of your own notes and the ones on WebCT (especially tutorial answers) for most of the work. I found all the textbooks I looked at complicated even the simplest things.

Gaining an understanding of the basics was difficult for me but with the notes & tutorial answers it was okay. Once you can do the tutorials i'd recommend going onto the past papers because the questions don't change that much. If you get stuck refer to the notes. After a while (i find) everything sticks in the memory and you're set! Anyway, good luck.

Be honest with yourself...

If you got a 7 in it, do you really think you're worth going into Honours?
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."

Well yes I do. You don't know anything about my other grades or what my situation was then. So I'd prefer if you wouldn't make such assumptions, especially since the maths department obviously do think I'm worth it.

Thanks for all the info so far.

Hey,

Have a go at the past papers, the always cover the same topics and very similar question. Also, have a go at the tutorials, they aren't too bad.

Good luck

plus its not an uncommon thing for them to do, i was asked to do it for MT2003 (got an 10 in the "resit" :( ) plus there were another 3 or 4 people in the same situation for that particular module

Of course. I got a 4 in one exam in my 1st year and then got a 17 when I resat it. Also, I failed another exam in my 2nd year. But I got into honours fine and have just gradated with a 2:1, so you shouldn't be so dismissive of people's abilities based on one-off downers.

Second year doesn't count providing you get the minimum grades needed for your chosen degree, which are usually minimal unless you're going for an MMath.

The maths department enjoy making honours exams isomorphic to previous exams and tutorial questions, so practice those until you can do them in your sleep and you should get a very respectable mark.

Worked for me!

Yeah I remember I once barely got a pass for a spelling test back at school. Should I have continued studying the English language?
