Graduation without exams?

Postby hmmmhaveabanana on Fri Apr 07, 2006 6:37 pm

If you cant take your exams due to the strike would you rather: retake them next year, use last semesters results, take an average of all your grades, or something else?

Something else. I need these ones to drag me up and I have a PhD to start August. Neither of those solutions works for me :-(

Doing insanely well this May would not necessarily bump me up to a first, and am well in my 2:1 comfort zone... and have been offered a postgrad course, so I really don't mind.

As long as they let us friggin' graduate.

they may not if you don't have full credits (i.e 480 for an MA/BSc Hons, I think)

I was talking about the lecturers who aren't marking work and are refusing to write exams.

Exam papers are not written 2 months in advance...its more like 6 months to a year...so don't worry there are exams to sit, the question is just when they'll be marked

you're talking Bollocks mate. The deadline for first proof reading of comp sci exams was about 5 weeks ago, right inside the strike period. One of my lecturers failled to submit an exam for this date and has yet to submit one. Shut the fuck up until you actually know what the fuck you are talking about.

The university has contingency plans. Just what contingency plans the university has remains to be seen, but I'm sure they'll tell everyone shortly.

Surely by definition it is that guy's fault. He didn't do his job, qualm with the government or no qualm.

It's where I start to disagree with strike action. Fair enough, it's a right, but when it starts to adversely affect other people, that's when it gets wrong.

To prove a point to the government, fair enough, to make someone else, otherwise unaffected by the strike, unemployed, not acceptable.

The whole point in a strike is to disrupt normal operation. They strike so you complain so they get their pay deal and start working again.

A strike that doesnt piss anybody off is doomed to fail.

What concerns me is just how unknown this strike is to the general public.

It wasn't anger, thats just how I talk mate. I know its not very gentlemanly but I can't be arsed changing it.

And, yes it is this "guy's" fault that he gave incorrect information, which is what my post was about.

I feel no anger about the strikes, what happens happens pretty much.

For all courses to be given the thumbs up they must submit a draft exam paper for external markers to approve. Only then can a course go ahead. Therefore an exam does exist

As for the striek itself its turned into an annual event and the press have given it wide coverage before...old news is no news I guess.

I wouldn't worry about your precious degrees though, I seriously doubt a University will postpone a set of graduates for an entire year! Plus in past strikes the one thing my old lecturers used to hate was how much extra work was created from the striek itself (i.e. stacks of marking etc to complete)
