Fucking Alldays

Postby Fíníneach Cróga on Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:49 pm

I went in to buy a packet of cigarettes in Alldays tonight. I was asked for ID. Although I was surprised as I'm 23 I duly obliged and handed over my matric card. This wasn't acceptable and therefore I was refused the sale.

I said to the cashier do I look under 16 and she said she knew I was well over it but she still couldn't sell them to me.

Has the world gone fucking insane? Please someone explain how this works: I'm obviously over 16, but still can't have fags. This is without a doubt the biggest example of seatsniffing jobsworthiness I have ever been witness to.

Rant over, but seriously; what the fuck? I haven't been this mad in a long, long time.

Yeah, i noticed the sign on bottoms up saying that they didn't accept provisionals or matric cards and all i could think was that i was damned i was gonna bother shopping in there if i had to use my passport just to buy some alcohol :-/

just after my 23rd birthday I went out to a hotel bar with that hotel's day manager. He is 24 and we both got ID'd on the way in.

You can never be too careful. Licensing laws are pretty tough, so consequently everybody's over-cautious.

Why they don't accept matric cards, even though it's got a photo and DOB, is beyond me. Although I can see why provisionals aren't liked, because a lot of people get them when they're 17... but, again, the DOB is on the front.

One of my friends passed his driving tests a month after his seventeenth birthday, and subsequently had a pink licence.

The excuse I get trying to buy alcohol with my provisional licence is that 'it's easier to fake'. Utter bollocks. Plain and simple.

Someone I know, who shall remain nameless, applied for their matric card with a date of birth that made them a year older. And they got it. I guess that's why they don't accept them.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

Is there anything to stop you doing the same with your driver's licence? My mum's licence DOB is false because she wanted to drive when she was 16.

Let's face it, matric cards are about THE easiest thing to fake - all you need is a blank card and a suitable printer. They have no holograms on for a start. Provisionals on the other hand are just the same as full licences but a different colour, although one shop keeper said something about full licences having some sort of reference number on them that can be used to check if they are genuine, and provisions don't have that.

[Rant]It somewhat pisses me off that so many places do not accept the Provisional Driving Licence, despite that fact that the police have officially endorsed them as acceptable proof of ID!![/Rant]

Alldays are utterly ridiculous. Went in to buy alcohol one night and despite handing over a valid drivers liscence that said i was almost 21 they refused me. The reason, someone i was with only had three seperate pieces of documentation saying that they were over 18, none of which wasn't a drivers liscence or passport. Now as she doesn't drive and a passport costs £60 upwards this provides a bit of a problem i feel.
Whatever happened to a bit of initative?

Bullshit. Full licences have your driver number, exactly the same as provisionals do. There are no other identifying numbers on the card. What makes it so stupid is that in most of these places, their list of acceptable ID includes photographic driving licences. That means provisionals too.

Go in most days as it is a place of convenience when you live just above it.
Went in with a friend who is 22. We were both choosing what alcohol to buy. I had left my passport in the union the night before. So when I was ID'd I went to get it. My friend tried to leave and was stopped. Eventually after much berating he was allowed to leave.
In two weeks I have had to produce my passport about 8 times in that shop and feel like a criminal when the SAME woman looks from my passport to my face three times before actually selling me cigarettes. I am 19.
Grrrrrr!

I walked into Alldays and started looking at the alcohol as I was going to a party and got ID'd straight away, which I though OK fair enough, then she handed it back to me and said she'd need to ID me again when I got to the till. WHY?!?!

My flatmate, who is 22, tried to buy a packet of sewing needles in Alldays, but wasn't allowed since she didn't have any ID on her at the time!!!
We weren't aware that there was even a restriction on sewing needles!

In case you became younger between checking your ID and checking again.

OR, maybe she's that bloke from Memento and she was just warning you.

I didn't realise you needed proof of age to look at alcohol.

Well I got ID'd for a lottery ticket in Alldays... not for the wine, but for the lottey ticket! When I handed over my drivers licence they first off didn't realise that had to make me at least 17 and then they proceeded to get a calculater out to work that 2006-1983 = 23! That made me laugh... spose it serves me right for buying a lottery ticket hey! (I just wanted to live the dream!)

They probably have a policy of only accepting certain kind of ID to make it easier to teach the staff to spot fakes. Given that most people don't have provisional licenses for very long it is probably more cost effective to simply not accept them than to train the staff to spot fakes. Of course in a town like St Andrews you would think they would accept matric cards.

Incidentally, Tesco have a policy of checking ID of everyone in a group if one person buys alcohol.

So does that mean that a parent shopping with a child can't buy a bottle of wine?
