The problem with stats like that is that you have to consider that there are around 300 million people in the US spread over a very large area so it's not particularly easy to get a truly representative sample.

Not easy, but not impossible. Postal questionaires are often used, from what I've heard. Or if you're really good you could squeeze it into a census return. More of an issue is how is the question phrased.
