Is Brian Lang leaving St Andrews?

Postby cam on Thu Feb 14, 2008 2:31 pm

It seems his job is advertised on the home page of the university website? Anyone know why he's leaving, or where he's off to?

His contract is due to expire and he's nearing retirement age - so we're advertising for a replacement.

Will students be told of who the applicants are or just the outcome of it all?

If it's done like last time, a headhunting firm will compile a shortlist of candidates who will be presented to a subcommittee of the Court (including the SRC President) which will make the final selection and inform the Court for its approval.

You will not be involved.

They have asked the students for their opinions this time, presumably to then help inform the selection at a later stage.

It was all web-based a few weeks back, and might still be available.

I have every confidence that a largely unnoticed internet survey will carry all due weight in the selection process.

Groups of random students - myself included - met with the headhunters about three weeks ago to discuss how the principal and senior Uni staff are perceived and what we expect from the principal's office. This (I believe) was a DoR initiative.

I'd therefore say that

You will not be involved.

was a little harsh and, whilst technically accurate in the singular form, disregards the consideration that the headhunters and Sabbs have given students' opinions.

Had it been noticed and had there been a strong student opinion regarding specifics, I'm sure it would have been considered, but as it is, no.

At least they tried, eh?

Unfortunately, it looks at though the survey and the invitation to send comments to the selection committee ended on 17th December 2007.

Atheist, if you feel that your opinions have been included and that the voice of the students will result in a better choice of Principal then that can only be a good thing. It will not, however, make the slightest difference to the final choice.

Wow! Bitter, haughty cynicism! What fun!

I'm not sure I'd want direct student input into the choice of Principal.

No, nor would I, and there won't have been any. I'm not a cynic, I saw how it was done last time, this "consultation" is a PR exercise and nothing more, the Court barely has a say in who's being selected never mind the student body.

he doesn't seem that old really to retire - surely he could stay on for another few years if he wanted to?

He'll be 63 when his contract expires, and while he could stay on under the rules of the Court (maximum age 70), that's close enough to retirement age, surely?

You're only as old as the woman you feel.

He must be very confused then... He goes from 15-20 and then resets every few years...

Oh... I didn't realise it would explode.
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."
