Your Religion?

Postby Chain Mailer on Mon Jul 19, 2004 5:37 pm

Ok, if you could make your own religion what would it be? Would it have a catchy name? Deities? Would you have your own 7 commandments?
'Thou shalt not get up before 10:00am'
'Thou shalt drink at least 3 times a week' etc.
Would you have religious holidays?
Thoughts please :)

Shouldn't there be ten commandments? (I was all prepared to give a serious answer about my religion, and I can't think of anything funny.)

7 deadly sins and 10 commandments I think...
I already am a participant in two major religions... the Church of the Flying Monkey and the Cult of Bob - in which I might add I am a high priestess. although attentdance has been falling.
My sacred text would be Pullman's His Dark Materials, the holy icon a pic of Jack Bauer... Liv, can you guess who I am? ahem. And everyone would be nice and look smart and wear a tie... oh no that's christmas in heaven, and I don't believe in an afterlife...
is atheisim a belief system people?

Atheism is regarded as a faith, or so I have been led to believe.

Atheism is a lack of faith or belief - how can it be a faith?

i still don't know what a religion really is. i never bought the idea of God when i was 3 or 4. my 1st mental image of God, upon hearing the bible read to me, was of a shrivelled up prune-like thing. no great surprise then that the fear of God hasn't exactly sent me fleeing in the past.

a good sound philosophy seems like a more sensible bet to me. then if there is a deity it's more a case of whether he/she/it is a wanker or not as to how you're dealt with. if said Deity is a wanker then you're probably fucked anyway. if said deity is understanding then you'd've thought they'd understand where you were coming from.

Atheism is the belief that there is no god or gods.

Surely for it to be a religion and not just a belief-system there has to be some kind of organisation?

Atheism isn't not believeing in anything (ie a lack of belief) it is believeing there is nothing, which is a belief and I imagine they have faith in this belief. It is not a religion per say but it is certainly a belief.

No it isn't.
Atheism is merely the lack of belief in a god or gods. It does not positively assert that there is no god/gods.
I'm an atheist - I do not postively assert that there are no gods because I cannot prove that to be true, at the same time I lack any belief in any gods (simply because I cannot force my mind to accept something that it does not).

Yes there are some atheists who do postively assert that there are no god/gods but they are a minority. - they are known as strong atheists (with the atheists who merely lack belief being known as weak or agnostic atheists).

Hah, you're repeating an argument in one of the discword books (probably the end of feet of clay at a guess) between dorfl and constable visit. I don't think they came to a conclusion either.

Isn't that agnosticism?
