sci-fi and fantasy

Postby franklyscallop on Fri May 07, 2004 2:55 pm

Hi,I'm trying to set up a sci-fi and fantasy society for next semester. If anyone is interested could they e-mail: tvr@st-andrews.ac.uk Also, I've just found out there used to be a SciFisoc, anyone know how long ago it finished? I'd love to hear from old members if they're around! And anyone got ideas for the new society?

Sounds interesting but I think that the problem with these things is that you need to keep the momentum going.

Sounds like a great idea, but what would we do at the events?

Yeah, good question. I think you need to establish what the nature of the group is. I mean, will it just be a chance for people who enjoy these genres to get together or will there be quizzes, fanfic writing or gaming or just general discussions on how crap Enterprise is etc.

Well... vote on films for video nights, show some sfx series, maybe Firefly or something. Discuss some fiction (anyone like Terry Goodkind books or is it just me?), some wine & cheese or snacks to keep us going . . Maybe look at fantasy art like Brian Froud or fanart, or graphic novels we mightn't see normally . . I'm also trying to find out about any conventions that might be in the North next year . . Just some suggestions.

PS Enterprise is g8 (though slow . .)! Everyone loves Tucker!

I'm really interested in joining, I was kinda disappointed when there wasn't already one here, because I knew there was one back home.

I LOVE Wheel of Time!

It's called Wheel of Time because as the Wheel of Time memory becomes legend, legend fades to myth and when the same age comes again the fucking series still isn't finished.

Are you saying that Trek fans can't be serious?

I think that quarterstaff is just slagging off Star Trek... and really given the past 10 years of sub-standard nonsense I'd agree.

I could be wrong though.

The old science fiction club has kind of been assimilated into gamesoc. If you e-mailed them saying you wanted to restart sciffy I think they'd give you the sciffy library which I understand is sizeable.

I suspect this would also be a good way to locate old members (if you'll forigve the stereotyping).

I'd love to see a sci-fi/fantasy club myself, and if there's anything I can do to help you set it up please ask.

(Oh, and Robert Jordan will be second against the wall when the revolution comes, right after Michael Moorcock.)
I probably don't like you, but don't take it personally. Nobody likes you.

cool. well i have some comitee experience, and know lots of union people.

email me through my account here if you got anything you'd like me to do.

its exam time, so i cant promise stuff... but i will do my best.

i prefer my scifi and fantasy in book form.... hows about we try to set up an exchange or lending system so we can have books, dvds and videos of DECENT quality stuff. am sure the union would give us a grant to buy some book stock with. it can work.

(i wont donate, but am willing to share my personal collections of May, Reynolds, Asimov and Niven)

any other ideas?

You like space-opera yet you don't mention Peter F. Hamilton - blasphemy!

In my own humble opinion Hamilton is the best sci-fi writer in the last 30 years - his first 3 books were phenomenal, followed by the orgasmic night's dawn trilogy (although the 3rd one was a let-down)...true he dropped a bit with the 2 books after his collection of short stories and his obsession with alien races is tiring, but "Pandora's Star" was fucking brilliant.
Also the best sci-fi writer has to be R.A. Salvatore.

hamilton is my summer project! i have his stuff, but aint read it yet - am working my way back through wheel of time (sheesh!) and reynold's stuuf at the moment.

hamilton will not be forgotten!

what do you make of larry niven? he's got a very unusual mix of frivolous characters, and opera-style plotting. i also love the balancing acts he pulls of with his science - he is master of hard sf.

mote in gods eye was rock solid! and even on the gothic side at points, which was very unlike him!
