An unfortunate thing I've learned throughout life is that if it comes to the need to use violence, something has gone wrong.
However, that said, when something goes wrong, you don't just keep letting it go wrong. At that point, you put an end to things, and sometimes threatening, or engaging in, violence is the best option.
When someone decided to fight you, and for whatever reason, you can not remove yourself from their presence, you defend yourself. You fight back until they stop fighting, then you stop.
Many people will say that if you use violence to defend yourself, you are just as bad as the attacker. That is nonsense. So long as you don't keep hitting them after they give up, that is.
Man is free; yet we must not suppose that he is at liberty to do everything he pleases, for he becomes a slave the moment he allows his actions to be ruled by passion. --Giacomo Casanova
