to be fair, Ricky Gervais has said in interviews that 'the office' owes more to American comedy than to British comedy, especially when it comes to the incorporation of 'soap opera'/emotional elements like Tim <3 Dawn and Wernham Hogg's imminent series of redundancies. He cited 'Larry Sanders' as an especially big influence, and has agreed to guest star on 'Arrested Development,' which is a newer American deadpan sitcom.

That all said, the American 'Office' looks like shit.

edit- actually, I kind of take that back. apart from the lead actor, that was different enough to be interesting.

At least it didn't have Brad Pitt as the boss... I think that it was pretty poor. Far too obvious, with none of the subtle discomfort and so on. It was more like LOOK HOW OUTRAGEOUS HE IS.

The Indian woman slapping him pretty much summed up the level of sophistication.

Watching it now, I'm thinking that the problem is that whilst this guy looked like he was acting like a dick, Ricky Gervaise looked like he actually was a dick. I mean, yeah, he's saying and doing stupid things, but I couldn't really be as frustrated with him as I ever was with David Brent.

There was a type of subtlety in the way that the British actors underplayed their characters to perfection which made the office such a success.

Americans can't do that. They can't do real life. This American version is cack. Why should we British watch American shows undoctored and American TV executives believe that the American public can't just watch something British, they have to remake it. But in remaking British telly, they lose all the funny/good bits.

Same thing happens with films.

Its a shame.

It worked for 12 episodes, I can't see it working for 24 episodes for 5 years. It'll just end up rehasing all the usual sitcom plots and jokes.
