to be fair, Ricky Gervais has said in interviews that 'the office' owes more to American comedy than to British comedy, especially when it comes to the incorporation of 'soap opera'/emotional elements like Tim <3 Dawn and Wernham Hogg's imminent series of redundancies. He cited 'Larry Sanders' as an especially big influence, and has agreed to guest star on 'Arrested Development,' which is a newer American deadpan sitcom.
That all said, the American 'Office' looks like shit.
edit- actually, I kind of take that back. apart from the lead actor, that was different enough to be interesting.
