Where have you been?

Postby Orcas on Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:44 am

For those wondering where to go for holidays, people should say where they've been so we have someone to ask about certain places.

I'll start: USA, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Bosnia, Spain, Croatia.

Australia, England, Scotland, Egypt, Singapore, Portugal, Spain (Extramadura only, but going to Madrid at Easter), Slovakia (Bratislava only), Austria, Slovenia, Croatia (Zagreb only), Italy, France, Chile, Bolivia.

Also going to the Netherlands (near Utrecht) in May and possibly Hamburg in a month or two - suggestions welcome! It's good to have a job that gets you to travel! :)

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend Cancun if you want to experience the true Mexico. It's full of tourists or so i am told. I have never actually been or am planning on going.

Make a map of where you have been:

http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedCountries

And unless you have done Russia, Canada, China and the US, it is going to look unimpressive on a world map when most of it isn't there. :-P

Here is mine:

Soon to add Spain, and want to fill in the rest of it at some point...

Making the world red... muaahahaha.

Soon to be added, er I suppose India, as I now would have free accommodation in New Delhi. I'd like to do bits of South America, and eventually trek down into darkest Africa.

EDIT: Pre-2001 (for the summer months of 2001) we were actually planning on doing a long trip around the Middle East; Travel to Turkey, and then all around Iran, down through Syria and Jordan, via Israel to Egypt, before flying back.
But you know... the best laid plans of mice and men...

UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden.

I really wanted to go to Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro after the exams, but can't due to chronic lack of funds. Grrr.

Ohh, I like this thread. I have a question for the person who went on the TransSib, do you speak any Russian or did you find that you needed much? That's the main thing keeping me from doing it at the moment. Garnet, I'll have some recommendations in a few weeks as I'm off to Spain on Friday!

And no package tours either, most on my own.

USA, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Norway, Hungary, Germany, France and Hawaii (which im counting as seperate to the USA as it was such a different experience) The states i visited were Washington state, California, Minnesota, Indiana, both Virginias, Maryland, Wahington DC

Best: New Zealand, Norway, Hawaii, Canada, Hungary (ok im biased because i live there some of the time) and Washington State

Worst: France, so much so that i'd be quite happy never to return. Tunisia was also disappointing and although its in Africa, you dont really get the feeling you are there

Edit: Ive also technically 'been' to Australia and Thailand, but didnt think they counted due to the fact i spent 6 hours in total in their airports on the way to and from New Zealand ;)

My Russian is limited to about a dozen words. I survived fine on the trans-sib, but I had prebooked it with a western company (due to time costrictions, it was a rip off) I had a friend left mongolia at the same time as me, and he did the 5 days straight, with even less russian than me. Buying a ticket in Mongolia meant he only needed to know some mongolian. The journey itself if just a train (and the scenery gets a bit samey after a while). I enjoyed exploring the little towns where the train would stop for half an hour or so. Don't stray too far from the train tho, I had a silent movie-esque moment, chasing the moving train down the tracks, with an arm full of bread, and jumping onto the train at the last minute! Depending on which way you want to go, and how many stops you want to have, it can be fairly easy. I think you need some russian to avoid being ripped off if you buy your ticket as you go. There isn't a "hop on hop off" option, you have to buy individual tickets for each leg. email me thru my profile if you want more info!
