Cancun tends to the place where all the American college kids go for Spring (Easter) break to drink because we can't drink until 21 in the US, but it's 18 or so there. Maybe fly into Cancun and quickly move out if you want to really see what that area of Mexico is like? I haven't been, but was thinking about that area and didn't want to do the whole Spring Break craziness.

France, Belgium, Netherlands (for 10mins), Cyprus (also only Greek side), Italy, Greece, Dominican Republic, Menorca, USA (Florida, Vermont, Michigan, Indiana and some other states), Canada, Spain, Kenya, Tansania, Madagascar, Zanzibar, La Digue, Seychelles (well, actually all the islands between Kenya and the Seychelles down the coast), Switzerland, Luxembourg (drove through it, as with Germany). Think there are some more, but I can't think of them right now. Happy to answer any questions or help people choose places to go to.

Remembered another one: Egypt, but only on a day-trip from Cyprus

Okay, not that far then. Still, I've been round fairly cool bits like non-total-mainstream-touristy Greece and Turkey(which I get shocked looks for for some reason), and I enjoyed being in America a fair bit(Vermont/Boston sort of places).

Also, going to Ireland for the first time next week. An O'Hanlon that's never been to Ireland, it gets a few raised eyebrows.

Nope, but you need photo ID, so I always take my passport anyway as it is the easiest one to use. No one will argue with it.

My Russian is limited to about a dozen words. I survived fine on the trans-sib, but I had prebooked it with a western company (due to time costrictions, it was a rip off) I had a friend left mongolia at the same time as me, and he did the 5 days straight, with even less russian than me.

The above is true. Don't book it through a Western package company, as they really are rip-offs. Some websites will make it seem worth your while (ie to get a proper sponsor for your Russian visa). Don't worry about the visa though, as it's just a bit of annoying (post-)Soviet bureaucracy. Spend a night at any half-decent hotel/hostel along the way, and you can work it through them.
What I did was to march into a Russia/Central Asia travel agency in Helsinki, and booked the first leg of my trip through them - just to have that first leg secured (Moscow- Ulaan Bataar in my case). Only paid an extra 25-50 euros or something for their office fees, on top of the prices you are charged at the local rail offices. Picked up my ticket when I arrived in Moscow, with 'bad English' and no real hassle. The second leg (UB - Beijing) we didn't book until in Mongolia.

Long story short: Do a bit more pre-booking if you are in a hurry, but try to find a non-ripoff travel service. Otherwise just play it by ear, and buy tickets at each stop. As maz says, there's no hop-on-hop-off option. Three varieties of trains (based on how far they go; Russian/Mongolian/Chinese). They are all more or less the same though - your basic 4-berth trains with a samovaar and toilet in each compartment. The only real difference is (Russian ones have more locals, trans-ones have lots of Mongolian semi-illegal petty traders).

Duncan Duncan Duncan, You should have gone on the school Iceland trip! It was awesome. Go back for more than an hour, I recommend it, but save your pennies, it's super expensive!
