Words that make you cringe

Postby Guest on Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:17 pm

Recently I have come across a few words that make me cringe and go hysterically mad when I hear them. One being moreish , "oh it's so deliciously moreish", even thinking it is making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Eughhh!!

And the other is one that I keep seeing on here, is it the word of the moment? Emo? What the hell is that, "his hair is so emo, how the feck can someone’s hair be emotional? I take it that's what emo means.

The English language is huge, why would you want to use words like moreish and emo!!!!!!!!!!!

Feel free to leave other words/non-words that you also find irritating. When this post is finished we should leave them here and never speak of them again.

cozy, I don't know why, I just think it sounds so incredibly stupid. There are more words like that in German, which I just find impossible to utter. I wonder why that is... why are some words just sooooooo horrible??? It's weird...

'Hen'- as in a Fifer's endearment. Hideous.

'Bootylicious'- just what is this monstrosity of a word?! Foul.

'Slut'- an awful word that nobody deserves to be called. Women that use this word distress me especially.

The word "mayo" annoys me for some reason. (Seriously. I blame Bramble :P)

The word "ace" kind of irritates me, as does the word "gay" when used as an insult. In fact, a lot of words annoy me. Especially warped American words.

Gotten. There's no such word: the past tense of "get" is "got"! Live with it! Don't start inventing words! Grrrr....

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

Not really a word that annoys me but today I heard someone say donner kebab as "donor" kebab, and that irked me.
The meat may taste like it came from an organ donor but it's not said that way

Fuck. But only when used as a verb.

Makes me want to hit the person who says it.

And another thing...

Equus asinus is an ass - not the thing you sit on, which is an arse.

Although this does give rise to amusing, purile donkey jokes.

No, you're right, Dr. Alex. British sex slang is awful. And 'pants' used for underwear- that makes me cringe.

I'm pretty sure 'gotten' came before 'got' historically ...

I can't remember most of the words I hate now. It's mainly phrases:

anyhoo
my bad
[that's so] gay
to impact
I could care less
Tommy can you hear me?

i hate 'meh'

'uber'- a word that, for some reason, became extremly popular midway through 2005, mostly by the shoddy writers for the Saint.

saying someone is 'off of'. (e.g- Pierce Brosnan OFF OF James Bond). Scott Mills, the radio 1 dj, says it ALL the time.
just me?
