Yeah, but watch they don't catch fire, what could be a nice torch-lit procession might turn into a giant fireball!

Many an academic was spattered with borderline-flammable material during the torchlit procession which drew Principal Arnott's reign of terror to a close. Kids - don't wear polyester. Unless you want to emulate the Buddhist monks who immolated themselves as a form of protest.

I was wondering why the torchlit procession was being described as an old tradition. I'd never heard of such madness in connection with the installation of a new Rector before.

Sir Clement had one in his honour; all the torchs bar one were blown out by about the middle of the pier.

In days of yore a torchlit procession was not in the least uncommon. They fell out of favour in the 60s/70s I understand and the constabulary became loathe to permit them. These days, seemingly, students are more reliable and so they're back.

Sort of both. Drag and torchlit procession Thursday, installation and fancy dinner etc Friday.

I was standing on the cliff above the pier, and watching all those little torches going along the pier was quite a sight, one I'm sure none of the pictures we took will do justice to. Well done to all those who organised it, it was one hell of a spectacle.

I was also very pleased to meet Simon today as part of the Bute Committee - I wonder how long he kept wearing that Bute tie for...?

You won't beat the last pier walk before the pier was closed, though. 2,000 students. Absolutely amazing.

Still, enjoy tomorrow.

'the torchlit procession which drew Principal Arnott's reign of terror to a close'

Care to explain? What was wrong with Professor Struther Arnott?

Also, is it true that on the Rectorial procession of Donald Findlay they stopped outside his residence on The Scores (now the home of History of Art) and chanted "Arnott Out!"

The best bit was undoubtedly Simon interrupting Brian Lang when he went off-script. If this is the way he's going to continue, we've got a fine man in the job.

Yes, that was great, bless him... Is is just me, or does our dearly beloved Principal always look extremely smug and pleased with himself, whatever he does and wherever you encounter him? Also, did anyone take any photos today - I saw lots of flashes going off! I forgot my camera, and I'd be grateful for some ceremony snaps...

Lol! The Principal being corrected was very funny! He just went bright red, shut up and sat down! lol.....if anyone filmed that bit - I so want to see it again!

Lovely installtion - anyone notice what the Organ player played after the Gaudy? It was apaprantly especially requested by Simon Pepper. The Choir were fantastic and the Principal was his usual self.

It took all my self control to not trip him up in the reception later.....

Oh also.....anyone notice how Simon Pepper looks remarkably like the potrait in Lower College Hall? (The one to the right of the door just as you enter). I pointed it out to him and he just burst out laughing and said it was a little odd and would investigate it later!

Oh finally, anyone know where this archway is that Simon referred to in his speech? The one that will supposedly collapse if a genius walks under it and hence why John Stuart Mill claimed that he, as Rector, wouldn't go near it!
