Ooh, coffee? You said the magic word!

A committee meeting? *gulp* Official things have a tendency to frighten me but I suppose I'll have to steel myself and show face. Anyone else fancy coming along with suggestions, show their support, stop me from looking like such an arse?

Sabra_girl - I'll be there too - I can meet you beforehand if you'd like to go in together - I know - meetings like this can seem to be intimidating sometimes! But honestly, you'll be fine! Come along and see what happens.

LOL it's alright for you, I have to chair the thing :P

But please do come along, if anything we can all hear what everyone has to say on the matter (though I am getting a better idea by the second hehe). Once that meeting is done, I will try and get the minutes done and up ASAP so that those who couldn't go can see what was said.

All the things about claims about money, etc. are on the web page we've set up.

As to only having to put in your coursework. I can not say strongly enough how incorrect this is. You will only receive a mark for a module if all of the work required is submitted.

There is no provision in the University regulations for students to gain a degree without getting the minimum amount of credit. In other words - this semester will count.

Are you joking? I was really livid about the firefighters strike- I thought that was out of order too! Do you not remember everyone telling me I sounded like a Tory cos I wouldn't back the firefighters? I said at the time that my mum works for the NHS but she would never NOT help patients...

Good on you, Kylie! :)

Ok I hate to repeat myself but I didn't receive an answer and I'm a little concerned...

Ok this may not be true but I heard from a friend that if the strike not resolved then the exams will not be held. All you would have to do is hand in your coursework and then you get an automatic passing grade in the exam.

[u]Is this true?

No - the university refuses to give out grades not based on academic merit.

So what would happen? Would the exams be put back to another date? If so...when?

I understand Lang's letter states:

"The University’s contingency planning relates to the provision of later examination arrangements and (if necessary) graduation ceremonies, after the end of the dispute, for affected students"

From what I hear, if exams are not held in May they will be done in the September resit exam diet, providing the strike has ended by then.

Thank you. After reading the letter from Lang it seems to me that you WON'T get an automatic pass the exams just get pushed back til September. Right?

Despite look at the web (please don't bold me) I'm still unclear where the Scottish Exec would get the money to fund higher lecturer fees - anyone know where it's sourced from?

from whom though? I mean Scots don't pay tuition fees, so it would only be foreign students attending who could generate extra income? (would be really indignant if higher fees for English students funded Scotland)

Neither. The Scottish Executive is providing the extra money for universities through its standard income stream- its grant from Westminster.

To be honest, I agree with the teacher's striking and as far as the uni goes it can do what it likes in terms of agreein or not, cancelling exams or not, all i want is that we are actually fully informed and updated on progress. PLus i think it would be disgraceful of the uni to cancel/postpone graduation, as many people are counting on it to go to further education and jobs

Just a quick bump for the thread and to remind people to come along to the SRC Education Committee this afternoon at 4.15 in the Committee Room.
