Module advice

Postby M249 on Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:02 pm

I have decided to take a 30 credit module each semester in the subject I wish to take at honours level, but I was wondering where to get the other two 30 credits from. Do they have to be from 2000 level modules to take honours? Most require pre-requisits, but the subject I was thinking of taking for the two semesters has lectures at the same hour as my main subject, and I am not really enjoying the third subject and wish to drop it. Could anyone please suggest a couple of thirty credit modules for next year.

Thanks.

P.S. My problem is not helped by the fact that ITS are the most incompetent organisation at designing websites I have ever seen as the module searching page results in a 'Software error' most of the time.

If You have not already done any of the following modules then do them:

IS2002 20 Credits
IS2103 30 Credits
MT1008 20 Credits

Art History Renaissance

Postby Tigger on Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:52 am

do the first year art history renaissan ecourse if you need fillers, great subject, and quite easy to pass in, though its a fair amount of work. if you want 2nd year modules, or need them, AR2003 intro to the middle east is basically a reading course, witha couple of essays, and will help you with practically any arts subject with the variety of stuff you get to cover. the best courses are either CS courses, or Russian Literature though, not too testing, for the former, and for the latter, just a great course.

As long as you meet your pre-req's for honours, the other subjects can be from 1000 level if you wish. As I just posted on a similar thread, for credit fillers, why not try these:
RU1011 Nineteenth-Century Russian Literature and Society
RU1012 Twentieth-Century Russian Literature and Society
ML1401 European Literature and Society I: the Nineteenth Century
ML1402 European Literature and Society II: the Twentieth Century

All are studied in translation, so don't worry about not being able to speak/read a foreign language. Plus as they're not essential parts of degree programmes, pretty much everyone on the course is just taking them as credit fillers.

Or, if you're at all musical:
MU1003 Understanding Music
MU1004 Music Techniques

Alternatively for really easy credits try:
SP1030 Introduction to Modern Latin America
PY1001 Reason and Argument
PY1002 Knowledge and Reality

I did these last year to fill up credits along side my pre-req's for honours and were so easy I forgot I was doing them half the time... One afternoon spent doing the assignments and a morning's worth of revision got me 13s, which given that was the only work I did for the courses, was fairly good.

If you're wanting something a little more taxing, but not much, try
AR2003 Introduction to the Middle East
Really interesting course encompassing everything from Mohammed to the Iranian revolution, covering history, religious studies and economics, and only fortnightly tutorials.

For sciency types,
AS1002 The Physical Universe
(or as more commonly known, Astronomy for Art Students.) As it's non-mathematical, it's pretty easy for non-physicists to follow. However, it does carry the antirequisites of AS1001, PH1011 and PH1012.
IS1001 Information Technology
Apparently ridiculously easy and offered in both semesters.
Again both are genereally only taken as fillers.

Generally I wouldn't recommend any of the other science modules as fillers because of the lab times that come with them.

Hope that helps.
