Library books over the summer?

Postby Lodestone on Tue May 09, 2006 6:07 pm

Is it possible to take library books on loan over the summer? If so, how?

I just got a stack out, only to realise they were due back on the 26th. If it's not possible to keep them out then mass photocopying awaits . . .

Yes. I used the traditional method of selecting what books I wanted and then taking them to the desk to get them stamped out, but I'm sure you can come up with another way if this method isn't suitable for you. You will of course need to get them out after the 26th.

Why? You're a first year.

Right. Sweet. Is the library open on the morning of the 27th?

'Cause I'm sad like that. Won't last the summer without a couple of analyses of Nietzsche to keep me happy.

They don't give you a couple of days before the end of term to take books out over the summer? Man, that's annoying. At least I only have one 'booky' subject.

You can take books out over the summer, but the problem is that if you are not in St Andrews, and someone recalls the book you are using, postage costs to get it back can be heavy.

And yes the library should be open on the 27th - in the morning anyway. It's open all through the summer holidays, apart from Sundays, and with shorter opening hours. (you can find these from the library home page)

EDIT: Ignore the last paragraph - library will be shut on 27th May -

Temporary closure of the Main Library

#2154 Posted by Luke Moodley (helpdesk) on 09/05/2006
The library will be closed from 3.pm on Friday 26th May. Essential work is to be carried out on the main power switch to accommodate for the new Arts building. It will not re-open until late morning on Monday 29th May. IT Helpdesk personnel will be re-located to Butts Wynd for a temporary period during this time to continue operation of the helpdesk phone and email.

you see, this is the attitude that i hate.

why the fuck should a first year be told that it is in some way wrong/geeky/unnecessary to take an interest, or be studious, in their chosen subject?

i had a gap year after my a-levels, so when i came here i actually enjoyed getting back into the academic routine. however, in my hall of residnece i was always known to be a bit spoddy, just because i was getting better than a mark of 5. "ooooooohhhh strive for a five", "you're a first year".

i know some people in my hall who failed second year, because of the awful work, or non-working, ethic that they picked up, (and were encouraged to pick up) in first year.

no wonder, as a university, we have slipped down the league tables, when ppl are being berated for actually doing some work.

sorry midget, not getting at you really, just the attitude as a whole. rant over.

Ooh sorry. I did fine in 1st year, never came anywhere near as low as 5. Its just that the summer between 1st and 2nd year is an odd time to work, compared to the other summers. Actually I don't think Lodestone is working he just wants some books to read, fair enough.

When 1st years put academic work before plays (and other important things) it does sort of get me annoyed because a lot of fourth years have sacrificed their degrees to make sure activities like drama are successful. This year for instance I could name at least a few dozen fourth and third years without whom there would have been sod all decent on stage.

This doesn;t apply to you Lodestone by the way.

First year is a good time to do other stuff aside from academia.

It bugged the hell out of me last summer when i wanted a book but someone had taken it for the summer - it wasn't *essential* reading as such though so i decided just to wait till the beginning of term but i was very tempted to recall it. I really hate the way the libary's set up with its long loans and holiday times. Books should be available from the library at all times, whether it's the summer or not. And the long loans should all just be 3 day or maybe 2 week loans because there is really no need for someone to keep a book for a whole semester.

And yes, i am aware that some people need to study but live far far away from St Andrews but that doesn't mean that the library should let them take the books away for months at a time. If there are other copies fine, but when it's the only one it can get rather irritating.

I do think long loan should be two weeks during term time. It's really annoying to go to get the books out for your essay three or four weeks before it's due and find the long loan copy has been taken out, and you and the other 100 students in your module will have to make do with the short loan copy.
