St Andrews American Football?

Postby John I on Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:01 pm

I know this isnt really the right Forum for this, but I figured there would be more of a response in here.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to set up an American Football team here? Or if anyone would be interested in playing, should one be set up?

A few of my mates talked about it in first year, but nothing ever came to be. I think with all the JSA/JYA's we get over here, it could be pretty successful.

So post any comments or reponses below, oh and if you are interested in playing, please check the box in the poll so I can get a rough idea of numbers.

Cheers, John

I doubt there will be enough to get any meaningful full-squad play, but you might be able to set up a few small teams of 5-6. In either case, I'm in (and also drop hints of similar teams for baseball).

Suprisingly enough, there is a university American Football League in the UK. Details can be found here:

http://www.bcafl.org/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Co ... all_League

There are 5 teams in the Scottish Region:
Caledonian Roughriders, Glasgow Tigers, Edinburgh Timberwolves, Paisley Pyros, Stirling Clansmen. If you got a steady number of people in your first year you could consider it for your second year.

There is also a non-university Dundee-based club http://d11676196.u148.franklandhosting.com/

If you have any questions or need any help recruiting people, please contact me at aupres@st-andrews.ac.uk. The AU is unfortunately closed to new clubs for the time being, that said there are ways we can help.

Regards,
Chris

Yeah that was my thinking, most universities have a team, so why not us?

Cheers mate, I'll see what happens

I too will lend myself to the effort of recruiting/speaking motivationally. May I recommend a facebook group?

i'd definitely be interested in this, again its strange with the amount of Americans we have, that we dont have a team.

Ive played for a youth team in Glasgow for a bit before i came here, the standard is ok, but better amongst the Uni teams, Glasgow in particular certainly last year had a pretty strong side. We surely must have a good few Americans who have played to a much higher standard though.

The cost of pads helmets etc would be high, so maybe flag football would be a starting point? Whatever though i still think it would be a good idea.

American Football is rugby played wearing seventy pounds of armour and the confused, angry expression of one who's had one to many a steriod injection.
Sorry, but someone had to say that, and after sitting through some of Channel 5's late night/early morning games I still don't have the first clue what on earth is actually going on, although I might have picked it up if the commentators had ceased their hellishly banal wittering for just a millisecond.

Does anyone know where in St Andrews it would be possible to watch American Football?

That is what I used to think, but after watching about 20 games with Americans and having it all explained - it really is nothing like Rugby! I still think rugby is better, but American football is good...and very addcitive!

Unless you fancy paying about £100 to watch it through NFL Game Pass on yahoo.com, the best you can hope for is the odd game on channel 5.

RE: American football being pussy rugby, I challenge anyone to take an American Football tackle unpadded and still equate it to rugby. The shape of the ball is where the similarity ends.

There's really no point turning this into a thread on Rugby vs American Football, because I assure you, anyone who has played both (like me) will tell you they're very different sports. Also, come on, its also a bit childish isnt it?

ANYWAY... on the subject of starting a team: Basically because the AU is being restructured, they arent accepting bids for new clubs, so it couldnt become affiliated with the Uni. This basically means that any help buying kit would have to come from outside the AU/Uni, and trying to get that for an un-affiliated club would be very difficult if not impossible (as far as I know).

However, if anyone is desperate to go play, Dundee Hurricanes have a website, go google it.

the Raisin shows 2 games from 6pm on a Sunday, though they close about 15 minutes before the last one finsihes which is a shame. The Dunvegan also shows the game if theres no golf on, but when I was last in they had it muted, which is a pain.
