Live Music

Postby justjump on Mon Feb 05, 2007 1:19 pm

I've been trying to find out about live music in St Andrews - my hopes weren't initially sky-high, but I've come up with pretty much nothing!
I tried e-mailing Livesoc but got no reply - would I be right in thinking that society is no longer with us? I also tried Musfund but can't find a website or anything for them.
I play a few instruments and basically just want to get involved with live music (I briefly considered open mic nights but can't sing to save myself)- any advice on the best places to try?

Ah the good old live music in St Andrews thread. I myself came here with high hopes of an active student music scene but after months of searching theres very little. Having come from an active live metal scene back down south im quite disapointed. Im aware there is probably other scenes but i can only speak about my lack of finding what i was looking for.

Livesoc is no more i believe, there was some brief activity last semester but alas nothing, just checked facebook and all is quiet. Musfund dont seem to be doing much either.

It does all come down to what sort of music your after, check out the Musfund page of Facebook theres a few things. It does seem your better finding friends or people you know who play instruments and going from there. I cant see why the music scene is so small, especially when you look at the drama, dance and other scenes that are pretty active.

Just out of interest what sort of things were you wanting to play?

Hi, thanks for the reply. It does baffle me a little bit as to why the music scene is so non-existant.
I was looking to play anything really - I listen to all kinds of music (unless you count cheesey pop as music), and am open to playing anything in a band, with the hope of finding new things and trying something different!

I was part of livesoc for the past two years (i have graduated now so don't really know what's happening). It used to be every other sunday from 9pm - 1am, you could come and play and/or sing in Aikmans and it was really great fun. I didn't miss a night! There was usually a drum kit you could count on and if you didnt have your own instruments, there were some guitars and of course mics, lights etc. Dan Holland was in charge of it last year, but as he is in his final year, maybe he has passed it onto someone else? drop him an email and find out - bc it was REALLY great fun! :)

Dan is still in charge of LiveSoc, but with Blués Brothers this week, and all the preparations thereof, as well as the whole being a final year thing, there haven't been many jams. There is still jazz night at the Byre, I believe.

Try contacting Alice Challiner via facebook. She plays acoustic guitar and organised a small acoustic night in the DRA facilities building last semester. I think she's interested in doing more.

I won't pretend to know much of their music, but from the few things I've heard they seem pretty good, and I'm always open to new things! I'm interested in all kinds of music (with a slight leaning towards rock)

Musfund

Postby Chris Kramlich on Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:05 am

Musfund meets at the Union on Tuesdays at 5:30 I believe. You can recognise us as the people with multiple drinks at an early hour. Look for Paul Everett, "Genghis" Cobb, Paul Wishart, Rosie McLeod, Johanna Crossley-Zells(sp?), or me, Chris Kramlich, if you need to connect faces from facebook and actually want to get involved. In terms of music, I believe Bohemond and Submachine are playing at Aikman's this Thursday and I think Bohemond is playing at the Union on Saturday. The gig at Aikman's is not a MusFund show. I don't know how many events we put on last semester, 5 or 6 I guess. Its not perfect but our goal was a show every 2 weeks or so.

We've had more difficulty getting dates for shows from the Union for this semester, despite bands being willing to come. As a subcommitee of the Union, we can't run events outside of it. Rest assured that shows are still taking place. To some extent, we are broadening our role. While we are most passionate about bringing outside bands to St. Andrews and promoting student bands here, we also issue loans to societies and individuals trying to bring bands or put on productions here, in a fashion a little bit like Mermaids but with less of a focus on theater. We also take care of equipment that we have purchased and are happy to loan(rent? I'm not sure...) it out for events such as bands playing at people's birthdays and the like.

If you have any questions beyond what I just wrote, you should really ask Johanna or Paul Everett, president and former president respectively. I'm a little bit creeped out sometimes by how friendly they are, to be honest(in a good way, of course).

And I apologise for the lack of a website; it is my responsibility and I am apallingly lazy and unmotivated.

Regards,
Chris

Aikman's usually has live music on some nights, doesn't it? And hopefully the Byre should be restarting the live jazz nights...

It really is a bit of a pity that the student music scene in St. Andrews is so low-key. But if any of you are around in May, be sure to check this out: http://standrews.facebook.com/event.php ... 202&ref=nf

Doesn't Aikman's regularly have live music on at nights?

And hopefully the Byre should be restarting the live jazz some time soon.

St. Andrews really isn't the best place for the student music scene... it's a pity, really! But don't fret! Check out this Facebook event: http://standrews.facebook.com/event.php ... 202&ref=nf
