You could sit here and debate over racism forever. the fact is, it happens in our society, it happens in every society and its not going to go away. It cant be labelled to one people group, area or country.police statistics are wholly unrealistic and can't be solely relied upon for accurate information. Indeed, it is a massive problem, which is not being tackled successfully, especially in Scotland, but i think we can all play a part in that, and be more aware of the problem. Enough said.

"If somebody kills somebody, it's a crime, but if somebody kills somebody of a different race, it's a hate crime. And we think that that is a savage hypocrisy, because all crimes are hate crimes. If a man beats another man because that man was sleeping with his wife, is that not a hate crime? If a person vandalizes a government building, is it not because of his hate for the government? The motivation for a crime shouldn't affect the sentencing. It is time to stop splitting people into groups. All hate crime laws do is support the idea that blacks are different from whites, that homosexuals are different, that we aren't the same. But instead we should all be treated the same, with the same laws and the same punishments for the same crimes."

This seems very cloak and dagger, for a simple incident that was discussed and sorted out. There is no need to delete the messages, making it look suspicious when it was all sorted out originally.

The union has no right to delete the messages on this board, when it is a personal matter between people, and I for one am not impressed by this stupid action.

I just want to second what Rennie said! If anything, the Union are just aggravating the incident, which was sorted out without too many problems.

Since when did the Union decide that censoring what what students say was a good thing to do? If anything, it's gonna cause more trouble.

I am not impressed with the attitude displayed by the person who decided that it was a good thing to delete certain messages, without adequate explanation to those who had taken part in this discussion.

I uphold the right of the admin to delete messages they deem unfit, but I feel in this case, with such strong but vague wording, a better explanation would have been more acceptable and stop all these new threads appearing. I understand if its a sensitive issue, but it seems that there was nothing out of order that deserves a 'disciplinary' action.

the 'disciplinary action' does not refer to the posts, but the investigation involving the incident itself. Sorry if the post was a little vague. As i said in the post on the main message board, please feel free to contact me personally either via e-mail (docomm@st-and.ac.uk) or by popping into the office on the first floor of the union if you have any further queries on this matter (the removal of the messages relating to the incident in question).
Hope you all enjoy PreSesh!

The only way we can be "more aware of the problem" is if we talk about it. That's exactly what we're doing here. Let's break all communication barriers.

A few words can make a big difference in this case it could even stop someone from comitting a very serious act of crime.

We should keep on talking about it and explore and discuss different ways in which we can change our enviornment for the better.

There's no use wasting our talents by pushing decisions that affect our future to the side.

Make a difference.
