A Woman's Place

The recent thread about gay marriage made me begin to think about the different roles about men and women. One post even said that the difference in sex, male and female, was only something defined by society. Well, I beg to differ.

Men and women have very different roles in life. God made Adam in his own image, and Eve in the image of Adam, which Milton clarifies in Paradise Lost, saying that Adam is "for God only, [and Eve] for God in him", making Adam subject to God, and Eve subject to the God in Adam. The Bible continues on this theme throughout the Old Testament, advocating woman's willing subjugation to her husband, and portraying those that didn't follow their husbands, such as Delilah, as terrible creatures.

Modern society has altered these rules terribly, with women wanting careers and independance instead of marriage, children and a life by the hearth. What meaning is there in working in a soulless office job, striving to get promoted by acting like a man? How can it compare to ironing your husbands shirts, anticipating his every need, and cooking his dinners for him so that he can relax when he gets home from work?

Women alone in the world are vulnerable, and even those that think that they are independant are really in need of a man to support them and cherish them. So I entreat all women to see the light, drop the facade of stubborn independance, and settle down with a kind man to bear children and do their duty to their husbands and their God.

For a while I wondered whether Milton's highly allegorical Adam and Eve constitute in any way a proof of the differences in genders.

Hmm, flawed reasoning here, and horrendous examples. Especially the Milton, not canon of any church, though one could argue that the Old Testament is made irrelevant by the coming of Christ and formation of the new covenant.

All in all, it looks as though someone randomly read book 4 of Paradise Lost, and thinking themselves smart, used an out of context quote in order to spark fruitless debate.

This does not mean I support gay marriage.

The not-guenuine-before-someone-shoots-me-down reactionary response out of the way, let me pitch my point that if I was married, I dont think that I would have a problem being the stay at home husband and my wife being the earner.

That however, may simply be because I take a strange enjoyment in cooking and ironing and because I'm incapable of doing a scrap of real work.

This is a God who's own existance relies on belief in it.

Whereas dirt is dirt, doesn't care who believes what or what the gossip is so long as theres beer in the fridge.

This is very entertaining. Clearly, though, considering world history, the "place" of women is due to the society they live in. Thankfully, today, I don't need to give birth to children to be accepted by my tribe... if I have a job, I can support myself and instead of a husband who goes hunting for me, I can have a personal shopper.
