Tennis balls

Postby Edit0r on Wed May 10, 2006 4:15 pm

Okay, this is a debate that has been raging between me and my lass for ages... well, the last couple of days at least.

Are tennis balls yellow or green?

Officially they're yellow, but I swear I see them as bright green, and so do 3 other people so far (out of about 15). So what's the verdict? Anyone else see green tennis balls?

Darius was immoral? what?

To be fair, who gives a fuck.

I do. Let us ponder...

tennis is played on grass.
Grass is green.
It would be daft to say that the ball was green as it affords no intelligence to the great bodies that govern international tennis, i.e. 'i lost the match because the ball was green and LEAPT AT ME FROM THE GREEN GREEN GRASS AAARGH'
So, to save face - they must be yellow. MUST BE.

I'd prefer purple.

Revision, much?

1) Yes, Darius was/is immoral.

2) Tennis is not only played on grass, it is played on surfaces where green would be very easy to see.

3) You're right anyway, they are yellow.

Yeah, colourblind maybe. Although I agree with sweet that everyone else is colourblind. :P

If they were green, wouldn't they look a bit more like the grass they are played on?

Just look at the background to your post (green) now look at your photo of a tennis ball (yellow).

Everyone knows the grass at Wimbledon isn't green, it's brown :P What we need is a spectrometer. If you illuminate a tennis ball with white light and examine the reflected light with a spectrometer, it should show the intensities of the various green and yellow components. Sorted. Bruce Sinclair could make it a new first year lab.

Clearly, blatently, irrefutably; yellow.

"Although the Rules of Tennis only specify that a tennis ball must be white or yellow, the ITF Technical Centre monitors the colour of tennis balls using a spectrophotometer linked to a computer. "
