Maths and physics building

Postby househunter on Sun Oct 08, 2006 11:08 pm

Rumor has it that the Maths and Physics building are closed all day tomorrow due to some electrical problems. Anyone know if this is true? No one in maths has told me.

I don't know about maths, but it is true for Physics.

They were installing a new super computer on Saturday in Maths, but for some reason the power supply was being routed through Physics. To carry out the work the power to the buildings was brought down on Saturday - however the contractors screwed up big time and have only managed to restore power to parts of Physics.

As the fire alarm systems are down then no-one (researchers, students) are allowed into the building. They are bringing in emergency generators, but the they might not be set up until this afternoon or tomorrow.

As it stood last night all lectures are cancelled. However, they are hopeful that some may go ahead this afternoon. My advice would be to turn up as normal for your class in case it does go ahead. Otherwise enjoy your day off.

Me...I'll have to work from home!

Yup, my 11am lecture has been cancelled. Which is nice, as I can stay in bed until my 1pm now. :)

Some of us got up for our 9 o' clocks! Oh well, at least we get a day off, although they do say 'postponed'. Not looking forward to that one so much!

I heard there was police tape at the entrance (but didn't see it myself)

What's all that about?

Just to seal off the building. They don't want anyone inside whilst the fire detection system is down.

I see that the physics department has scheduled lectures now for alternative venues. (It's linked from their homepage in case anyone was looking for it.)

In fact, it is here:

http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/physics/new ... _10_06.htm

I suspect that the maths website will be down since they seem to use their own servers.

I don't have a facebook profile anymore. If I did, would I include it here?

Can't the physics department or someone else post the lecture theatres for maths as the server is down...? How are we supposed to know, I am not keen on going to the union now.

Pete Lindsay sent e-mails for MT2001 and 2002. Not sure about the rest.

Gateway Building - big round thing on the North Haugh, one of the first things you see as you come into St A's. Sometimes lit up purple.

The computer might have suffered from the deadly epsilon virus, and didn't have the latest upgrade (version "delta") to be immune to it.

Or maybe the contractors messed up.

It would also seem that the Union have no information about maths or physics lectures, despite the email from the Principal informing us to the contrary. Hmm.
