Re:

At the University of Edinburgh they tend to have a panel interview of 4 or so people who go over the job description and your application form. I would brush up on your research skills - reading academic journals, laboratory skills, final year project. You might be surprised how many people will app...

Re:

I see that the Philistines are upon us. Glasgow should be on the crap list as it is not that nice a place to live – considering most of it – yes it has tiny enclaves of nice bits-are not the sort of place that you would want to live in due to the terrible state schools, bad housing, crime levels, th...

You should visit Tollcross, Shettleston, Balanark, Cranhill, Queenslie less face most of the east end, Sighthill, blackhill, Castlemilk, Milton, Union Street, St.Enoch’s Square, I could go through most of the city. Making little potemkin villages along the Clyde and sandblasting some buildings in th...

No - 'Idealist' asked if I have ever lived in Glasgow and that I was being ignorant, I was illustrating that I am not.

I would hardly have been dumbfounded if St.Andrews was not in worst – house price compared to earnings and things to do must tip it that way.

Re:

IBM are good, most businesses use them, but they tend not to be the most attractive of machines. I would go for one with a wire less broadband modem and with a DVD/CD burner. PC World, evil though they are, often have offers and pay nothing for X months – and they have price ranges form £400 - £3000...

Re:

There is a cave below the castle at the north side (facing the sea) I do not know 100% how to get there - there is a concrete shelf leading there though, Historic Scotland might help you if you go into the castle and ask the staff. The east sands have a cave too - you will have to wait till low tide...

Edinburgh and Lothian Club

Would anyone be interested in an Edinburgh and Lothian Alumni club? The west of Scotland has one and it seems silly that Edinburgh does not have one when so many St.Andreans live here.

If there is any interest then I can start the process and set up a web site and the like.

New Arts Building on North Street

Has anyone else seen the plans for the new Arts building on The Scores? It is so ugly - even next the main library. It is on the architect’s website: http://www.reiachandhall.co.uk/work/work.htm Is there a way to change this so that it fits in with the surroundings rather than impose on it? The Scor...

It could take its surroundings into consideration - blend in etc rather than stand out. I like modern architecture - I actually really like the Mat and Physics buildings - but not Melville - that raw concrete is a terrible finish for Scottish weather-it is ok in a warm climate like Israel but not da...

Re:

There is a link from the basement of a B&B on The Scores to the tunnel under the castle - you can see it through the drain on the scores and go in the tunnel from the castle - it does not go to the beach. There is a second tunnel in St.Andrews from Abbey Park to the main part of St Leonards School -...

You have to make up your own presentation - aimed at the appropriate level. So if you want to aim it at intermediate two then your presentaion content should reflect this level. I do not know what the written exam is about - prob about the course of study that you have applied to do. I have a few fr...

John Knox celebration?

Will the university be celebrating John Knox this year - it is 500 years since he was born? Surely this controversial, but historical figures life would be worth celebrating, even if it is just to better inform the public about Knox? I would be quite interested in people’s opinion and I would be int...

I have an interview for the University of Edinburgh - some group talk and a presentation. Is this normal? A friend who did a PGCE (they now seem to be called PGDE) told me that getting an interview means that you are 60% there and if you fail that means that you screwed up at the interview - is this...

No Turkey in Europe

Turkey is not a European country; it never was and never will be, so why even entertain them with notions of entry into the EU? It is an Asian country with Asian religion (Muslim), Asian ethnicity and Asian ways. It is only by some historical accident that they have any land in Europe at all – it wo...

There also exists a regius professor post. I believe these posts are paid by the Queen/king.I do not think St.Andrews has any. Regius professor ['ri¢°dʒ©¥əs] noun (British) a person appointed by the Crown to a university chair founded by a royal patron [ETYMOLOGY: 17th Century: regius, fro...
