Um...No.

Let me be clear about this - I may not have been involved with the competition for ten years, but I have been solidly involved for four years and have it on relatively good authority from those with more experience than I that what happened last year was not something that was commonplace. I realise...

Re:

Just one more thing to add about the confusion over the standing orders... Rachael was speaking in the debate, as was the deputy convener, as were the only other people that have a lot of experience with chairing. We were incredibly lucky to find Rob at the last second (literally 15 minutes before t...

The Tab

Sorry to stop the discussion about the change in the standing orders - I remember the rule being only about the Queen as of my start at university...these things do tend to morph and change with time. But here it is...the tab of the Inter-Res. INTER RESIDENCE TAB RND 1 RND 2 RND 3 SUM THE BIATCHES… ...

Inter-Residence Debating Competition 2007

It's that time of year again - the John Blair Shield is up for grabs again. Melville is the current champion, so if you want to defend your hall's title or prove that there's another hall that is better, here's what you need to know. Wednesday, 21 February we'll be holding both the preliminary round...

Re:

It's an apostrophe, guys. From experience it's usually the host institution that massacres the spelling of St Andrews by placing in apostrophes or full stops where they don't belong. These are the same people who have at times spelled quite straightforward names incorrectly. I say we just blame Lanc...

Netan Grogan? Surely Netan Dogra? I have this image of a debater that's part Netan and part Rose Grogan...terrifying really.

Re:

Initially when this was brought up at Board, I was hesitant - I remember the days when EVERYONE including the Board and the Convener would drink during the debates. I never really thought it was a problem. However, now that I look at it I see two major problems with this: first of all, if everyone i...

Re:

Congratulations to Doug and Connie for advancing to the next round of the Mace! In regards to Bogwall, I've done some looking at trains. On the Sunday, the earliest train is at 9.50am getting into Leuchars at 2.15pm. I think that considering it's Raisin Weekend, we're probably going to want to get b...

Re:

At this point, I feel the need to share what Miss Rachel Chan of BPP Law School said on the discussion on British Debate about whether or not we should be concerned with hurting new (or even old) debaters' feelings with low speaker points. "Had someone told me I was a fuckwit earlier, I could have s...

Re:

Can I just say how much I DESPISE the 30 point scale? Even with the option of half points? There's an interesting (read: boring as watching paint dry) debate going on the British Debate mailing list about this - I find it funny that the older, English debaters think there's nothing wrong with the 30...

Re:

If everyone going to Newcastle on the Friday morning goes to the bus station at 6.40, we could arrange taxis, etc then.

I thought there were 3 UDS HLMs: Simon Pepper, Sir Clement Freud and Ewan MacDonald. At least, those were the ones that I can remember, I bet there are a few more in the years before I was on board. Haha Jess!

I'm loving the fact that winners, etc, have their names as links to their facebook profiles. Hilarious.

Maidens 2006

All right, since the Sinner crashed and I lost my original thread, here's the updated Maidens announcement. Maidens is happening this Sunday (15 October) in the Union. Registration will be on the top floor (look for signs) from 10am - 10.30. Rounds will be beginning at 11am. Drag yourself out of bed...

Quoting jennyo from 21:42, 8th May 2006 I remember being told by the St Andrews admissions rep who came to my school 'If you get over 1250 on your SAT you're pretty much assured a place'. Of course, that was in the dark ages, before they had to beat American girl applicants away with sticks. Hehe. ...

1470 for my SATs under the old format. 780 Verbal, 690 Maths I think.
