Re: The country's top matchmaking university?

RedCelt69 wrote:Anyone else wanting to own up to having fallen for their significant other at St Andrews?

Yes, my husband and I met in St Andrews when we were both PhD students  and I know lots of other couples who met there too.

Re: What's the normal charge of photography for a wedding?

If you're looking for a wedding photographer, I'd recommend Alex Morgan - http://alexmorganphotography.com/ We used him when we got married a couple of years ago and he was really good. In fact I think a couple of our wedding photos are up on his website! I honestly can't remember prices, but he's d...

Re: Where to get a hamster?

Yes, the pet shop on Bell Street sometimes has them. Another place to try is the garden centre in Cupar. If you can travel north of Dundee, there's an SSPCA rescue centre betwen Dundee and Forfar on the A90 which is where I got my current hamster from.

Re: Shipping

Thanks for the advice! Will definitely look into Fast Lane. I'm also going to pack as much as poss in the luggage for the plane too - I'd already been comparing airlines to see which ones had the cheapest excess baggage charges! However, as I'm the kind of person who pays for excess baggage just whe...

Shipping

After 13 years in St Andrews, my husband and I have to leave in the autumn (*sob*) to move to California. We'll be spending 2 or 3 years there so will obviously need to ship some stuff across - primarily clothes, shoes and some books - we're anticipating putting everything else into storage. Ideally...

Re: some questions about viva

Hello, I have some confusions about preparation for viva(PH.D). 1. If I submit my thesis on Jan, when can I have viva? In general, they don't expect you to wait more than three months before having a viva, but there are sometimes circumstances which mean you have to wait longer - I think my husband...

Re: eBooks...

I have a Sony Reader - Christmas gift from my husband in 2008. I LOVE it! I think it depends how often you read, what you read, and where you read, as to whether it's the right choice for you. For me, I find that particularly if I'm travelling, it's fantastic as I can take so many more books with me...

Re: Woolworths?

It's going to be a Nisa Extra. Although if that's needed in St Andrews why didn't they just keep Alldays?

http://www.nisa-extra.com/Contact/standrews.html

I'd been hoping for an M&S Simply Food - you'd think that would do really well in St Andrews.

Yes, we're moving to Pasadena, California in the autumn. Beats this weather, that's for sure.

Re: g20

There's a 30mph speed limit on the road past the Bay Hotel and no waiting signs all along it. Was not best pleased to come across the speed restriction this morning!

Re: Old people are crippling the UK bus network!

However I do think their free timings should be restricted to off-peak (missing 7.30-9.30am and 4-6pm) to allow revenue passengers commuting to have priority. The OAPs can't complain because they're allowed to use the bus, they just have to pay for it if they must travel at this time. I agree with ...

Re: Dunhill fireworks?

Pretty sure it's 8.25pm on Saturday (think I read this in the Courier yesterday). However - gale force winds are forecast, so I'd check whether they're actually going ahead before you leave home!

Re: Computers

St Andrews has one notable computer shop at the edge of town centre and a dixon. Both I wouldn't expect to be cheapest option. It's a Currys, and when I last walked past it it had a big closing down sale sign in the window. So you might get some discounts - if it's still there when you arrive. Larg...

Re: Pay for Teaching as a Postgrad

Yes, for History at least, although the hourly rate of £25 looks good, the contract also states that you get a set sum per class which is to cover all preparation, marking, office hours, teaching hours (they allow you half an hour per tutorial group for preparation - ludicrous on weeks when you need...
