Re: Term Dates and Holidays :)

I was just surprised Hennessy considered there to be civilisation north of Perth! Glad I eventually escaped to Cardiff via St. Andrews. Glad to hear it, Emma, and good luck with your course (you never know, rocks might turn you). By the way, Colin Donaldson, one of the first year lecturers, is frien...

Can I just register my disgust, in fact, utter disgust that you come from Dingwall and aren't taking Geology!!! Didn't the cheery Aberdonian tones of Mr. Strachan appearing a few days a week have any influence on you?! Oh well.

I graduated in 2007. Sadly, Grahame Oliver and Ian Alsop, good people for structural and metamorphic geology, have left the University and I think have been replaced with short-contract staff. Ian in particular was an excellent teacher. The degree will not run after next year for new undergrads - so...

Re:

Cheapest?! It is Skye after all. I believe that if you get a bus to Glasgow you can then get one to Portree direct (it used to be Rapsons coaches, not sure who runs it now - probably Stagecoach so try there). Should be possible in a day. As for accommodation, will you have a car up there or not? If ...

Unreg Bob, I hope you are displaying some amount of tongue in cheek. I would stick up for Darwin and his work on the basis that his work was carried out on a background of religious doctrine, thus: When the common view of a God-driven world exists, where more literal bible translations hold sway; it...

I think that the tennis fans (or dare I say the "people who are wanting some British sporting success") had kind of written Murray off as a failure. The crowds didn't seem to care about him until yesterday, when he finally showed considerable fight and made a real attempt to get the crowd on his sid...

Re:

Cardiff University managed to put on a "St. George's Day" menu at lunch in the refectory - a quick glance at the menu revealed such delights as steak and kidney pie. Now was this a cynical ploy to attract the hordes of English visitors for open day? The prices were nudged up, certainly!

The letter you got should have basically said "we are awaiting the vote in parliament on scrapping the graduate endowment, IF you end up having to pay it, how do you wish to? Now come on, whatever you think of the crucial chalked-off Italian goal, the offside from Barry Ferguson for his goal, and the frankly shocking decision that lead to Italy's second; Scotland were the better team. They had more fire in them, and but for ballwatching for the Italian goal and McFadden'...

Re:

I'm going with the "well tough, there's a waistcoat, a jacket and robes over the top of the shirt so if it is a dress shirt, so what" approach. The university really could do with giving more precise details. I e-mailed them in the end regarding kilts - and cream kilt socks were ok - I know that got...

Re:

It may vary between departments, but 13.5 (60%)-16.5(70%) weighted mean is at least a 2:1 in the geoscience department for me. Can be upgraded depending upon the median. Hello At the moment, your grades without counting this semester's continuous are: mean 14.98 and median 15.35, so a solid 2:1. If you were to get two fives in your exams; you would, given your continuous assessment still get over a mean of 13.5 (or at the very worst your median score would still be ...

Re:

Give it your best shot. You might be in line for an exam board decision on your grade (for us in Geosci that's a mean of 16-16.5 and a median the same); having a first for a dissertation will count in your favour.

Once again, go for it!
