I don't know if its always been there, but this week I've noticed a themometer on the desk above the long loan return slot. Its a health and safety one with diferent levels marked on it. It is usually in the "OK" section, so at least in that one spot it would appear to be warm enough.

I wouldn't buy any until a few weeks into the semester - in 1st year I spent hundreds of pounds on the recommended books and hardly used them. All the core books are in the library.
But if you really want them, I'd check amazon before going to Balckwells in the union.
The easiest thing to do is go to the ELT building (kinnesburn) on Kennedy Gardens, above the north haugh near Uni Hall. They have the open association prospectuses and sign up sheets.
