Re:

try 'French for Reading' by Sandberg; doesn't even try to teach pronunciation, but is a massive and very well organized help for learning written, formal French. I liked it so much I bought a copy secondhand online!

Re:

hopefully this is relevant enough to warrant a mention: the skeptics' bible, which assigns many lines from both testaments into cheeky categories. Have a look http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/ Also includes the Koran and the Book of Mormon, for wider skeptical reading. Apparently there are seve...

Why does this issue demand any kind of strict policy? Surely immigrant workers in Britain will learn and use English where it is necessary, just as a workable minimum of English can be found in immigrant communities across the United States. And if a 'foreign' enclave appears where English is tough ...

Re:

As for pissing publically, I don't mind it that much - and surely rules such as eyes front exist for the very purpose of preserving privacy? Personally, I always assume people who bolt into a cubicle have something to hide. What of pee-shyness? It's a hidden phenomenon of humiliating proportions. I...

Re:

I didn't mind Murray that much, but the bitching at 'late' students was pretty damn unwarranted. They were just barely late by the lecture theatre's clock, which itself was about 5 minutes fast. But oh well. Good luck on exams! and is the Close Reading section definitely restricted to NA and Orlando?

Quoting novium from 01:51, 5th May 2006 I don't think it is fair to the child. When they're 20, their mom will be 83. eighty-three. I was born in 1986 when my father was 58-- he'll therefore be nearly 78 when I turn 20 this year. Our relationship is fantastic and, as he often says, having younger c...

Re:

I'm a bit surprised at the reaction here. I, too, found very little of this funny. But was humor really the aim here? In the past, headlines have been made by a single reporter or 'town hall' participant having the guts to ask Bush or his cronies direct questions without worrying about upsetting the...

Roast President ala Colbert

Amazing. You may have heard about that double-bush gag at the White House Correspondents' dinner a few days ago (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4959380.stm ) but there's been an odd lack of reporting over the 20 minute or so keynote address by Stephen Colbert which came later. If you're n...
