'Is the Renaissance scholar dead?' debate

Don't know if anyone else read this article in the Guardian on Tuesday, but here it is online: http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/comment/story/0,,2271681,00.html To me, Monck's idea of relegating all Arts subjects to mere 'leisure activities' demeans those who have passion in those areas. In ge...

Re:

Geez, guys, I just gave my opinion, coming from someone who has had these exact problems myself countless times, and indeed do require reading glasses. I never suggested that the OP forgo medical help if he/she hasn't been for an eye exam, but as I come from America where nothing is free, I simply o...

Re:

It sounds like all you need are reading glasses, so you probably don't need to get examined. Some shops will have reading glasses for cheap, as they're only magnifying lenses and don't need to be tailored to each person except in the most drastic cases. Tske a book into a shop, try on a couple, and ...

As long as they are not Wiccans I have no holy war against them.

...eh? Is this a serious statement or some kind of ironic sarcasm I'm obviously overlooking? As a Pagan in St. Andrews, it's occasionally difficult to grow the required thick skin.

I'm lactose intolerant and have such issues finding anything good here. You can find some stuff in the various health stores, but it's generally not that good. For the most part the "cheeses" taste like plastic, but I suppose they can be alright if you're really desperate. The Alpro soya stuff is go...

Quoting Yannick87 from 22:43, 4th Dec 2007 Are they any good for tattoos? I've heard some horror stories (losing colour etc.) and not sure whether i should just wait and get it done when back home. You'd be better off going somewhere else, honestly. I got a smallish tattoo on my hip there, only an ...

The end of the world - and why it doesn't matter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDsIFspVzfI

A brilliantly well-explained argument, though a tad preachy in the last minute.

Re:

You should have been told when you matriculated in first year (or if you're a first year, then this year) who you're registered with at the Health Centre. Every student is automatically registered there, and it's assigned by last name. I only know the number for the one I'm registered at, for the mi...

Tv Links Raided, and Owner Arrested

http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/10/19/1846236 and http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,2195407,00.html Personally, I think it's a brilliant thing, these pirate tv/film websites. The entertainment industry is already overpaid and living like royalty, while hard-working normal people can ...

Re:

Neither this thread nor the poll addresses the issue of those (in the minority at St. Andrews, granted) who would love to go but simply can't afford even the £30 ticket. I can see that a bigger, more famous event would cost a hell of a lot more, but as stated in the publicity: this is only a little...

Not sure if you're aware of it, but you can also get temporary dreads that braid into your hair. You just need to have hair that isn't rediculously long to begin with.
