Re:

Mediaeval History, Ancient History and Beginners' Latin - the exact combination that I did in first year! Mediaeval History is fabulous, especially in the second semester. All the lecturers are good but Professor Bartlett is amazing, don't miss his lectures! I didn't enjoy Ancient History and Latin ...

Re:

Have a look at what I wrote on the thread "v silly module question" about Mediaeval History, on this same board. Sorry, I can't be bothered to type it out again after a long day at work!

Re:

I took Mediaeval History and Beginners' Latin in first year. I found ME 1001 and 1002 excellent - the content is interesting, the lecturers are good (especially Professor Bartlett - don't miss his lectures!), the set texts are generally readable and the workload's not too heavy. Although Latin has c...

Re:

Quoting bdw from 22:40, 16th Aug 2005 This concept of reparations could be taken to ridiculous levels - should the inhabitants of modern day Rome pay reparations to most of Europe for the actions of the Roman Empire, and do the Norwegians owe trillions to all of the modern countries which were detr...

Re:

I agree that it was an awful programme. Rather than putting forward intelligent arguments for reparations, he just spent most of the time presenting evidence that proved the involvment of the major banks in the slave trade, which was an established fact anyway. I also disagreed with his use of the G...

Re:

The kiwi fruit is not native to New Zealand, but in fact originated in China, hence its alternative name, the Chinese gooseberry, or in Chinese, "yang t'ao". It was introduced to New Zealand in 1910 by James McGregor and Alexander Allison.

Re:

[quote] Quoting Al from 16:22, 11th Aug 2005 First of all, Sally is not an abbreviation of Salvator. Putting the best possible slant on it, Sally could be described as a hypocorism for Salvator. Whether you think it appropriate to refer to Jesus as "Sally" is another matter. Second, it has been know...

Re:

Quoting Al from 09:46, 9th Aug 2005 It is Sallies not Sally's. Actually, no it's not. Although "Sallies" is generally used, technically it should be Sally's, as the abbreviation of Salvator is Sally and it is the Hall of St Salvator, hence the apostrophe denoting possession - Sally's. "Sallies", in...

Re:

Sally's is ace, you people should count yourselves very lucky for getting in. I was on A floor last year, it's the first floor, pretty nice, and the sub-warden, Leanne, is sweet, assuming it's her again. Word of warning though - beware of the A floor milk theives!

Definetely the winter months are the sexiest - romantic walks in the snow, using the cold as an excuse to snuggle up by the fire, early to bed due to the early darkness. It's when I got together with my boyfriend, so it worked for me!

Re:

My personal favourite interesting fact (and I have a lot to choose from, it is a particular hobby of mine): It is perfectly legal to shoot a Scotsman from the city walls of York with a bow and arrow on a Sunday. Bring your archery equipment next time you're in York, Jason! (Only joking with this las...

Re:

Surely if you got a piece of paper that was large enough it would fold more that eight times? Or does it depend on the thickness, or lack of, of the paper?

Can you do it?

I've heard that it's impossible to lick your own elbow, although admittedly from a not particularly reliable source, a Penguin chocolate bar wrapper. I can nearly do it, but not quite, and I'm double jointed and the proud owner of a long tongue. I've also heard that a piece of paper cannot be folded...

Re:

I never step on the initials, out of respect for Patrick Hamilton. Similarly, I also avoid the George Wishart initials near Castle Sands, even though there is no asscoiated curse. Plus it's good to uphold university traditions.

Re:

I agree it was an awful programme. Collins raised the odd good point, but overall his argument was a shambles. He seemed to be implying that society should be striving for equality but failed to grasp that, although an excellent idea in theory, equality and one class for all is impossible in practic...
