Re: Wired down?

OK. Thanks for the update. Will incoming mail be cached somewhere rather than going to the Maildirs? Or will it be bouncing back?

Misleading?

Does anyone else find the title of this article misleading?

Re: Caledonian/ Carnegie scholarship

I applied for a Carnegie Scholarship for PhD funding. I had to give the "application" form to a nominee. I don't think it was restricted to one-per-department. I was unsuccessful in the end, but I expect that someone else in my department wasn't. I applied for funding to come down to Engla...

Re: Church Bells

Since graduating I have moved to Durham. The bells in the cathedral here are rung for seemingly hours on Thursday nights and Sundays, and can be heard from a fair distance. That's on top of a number of parish churches with bells in their towers.

Re: Webmail Spam Filters...

No idea :) I'm not even sure they've rebooted the mail server for a while: we learned a while ago that the reason WiredSoc mail was rewritten as "students-wired-society" was that they hadn't restarted the mail daemon that does the rewriting.* So when a full overhaul will come is anyone's ...

Re: where to shopping

When I lived in Fife Park for a summer I always went to Morrisons, going "across" the Lade Braes to get there. (Turn off Hepburn Gardens next to the entrance to the Principal's house). As pointed out, the range is much better, and I found the walk more pleasant.

Exim

I'm finding that Exim is complaining when I'm using Mutt to send mail. It's referring to /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated and mentions that it expects option settings. Looking at the contents of the file, I'd guess that it should be complaining (the file is just a single line with 2393 in it!) Is...

Re: Anyone else finding that the internet is very slow at the mo

I'm finding it difficult to access anything at st-and.ac.uk (including my WiredSoc mailbox :( ), so is there something funny with the university connection?

Re:

Yes, I'd noticed. I wouldn't have thought so, but might this be impacting on the terminal at all? I'm finding mine does a CR (but no LF) once I start typing, and it types over the prompt. I guess some changing of a terminal settings file would sort that, if anyone knows the right one to edit. I also...

Re:

On the note of migration, I'd be curious to know how the "hardware" page on the website corresponds to the new setup. How many of the machines shown are now split into many virtual machines?

Quoting Paul Carey from 11:07, 29th Aug 2008 It's because the debian builds usually have other mods done to them and the mozilla foundation won't allow them to brand it as firefox. Iceweasel

I've just installed Debian on my laptop, and they insist on calling it Iceweasel. It's a bit of a change for me since my Ubuntu PC is still using version 1.5 (which is working fine for me).

SSH Connection Refused

Anyone now finding that SSH to port 22 on wired is refused? For me it's happening both outside and inside the university network.

Re:

If you wanted something more sophisticated then you might want to try MySQL with some sort of frontend. Access may indeed be the best for a small-scale thing but if, say, you wanted to do something web-based then MySQL+PHP is a popular way to go. If you're Microsoft-loyal then there are equivalent w...

Login difficulties

Is anyone else struggling to log into wired?

(I'm using RSA keys but a password doesn't work either. Also logging in from different hosts doesn't solve the problem so I doubt it's a host blacklisting thing.)

Is the authentication back-end on stoned (or wherever it now is) down?

Re:

It's a shame people aren't suggesting things like, say, the Bach Passions, Beethoven's late works, or even something like Mahler's ninth.
