Re: Rate Your Landlord! Private Accommodation Survey 2009-2010

Same! Which is a shame because I'd really love to warn people against my landlord from last year. He's still sitting on the paperwork for our deposits!

Re: livin' for a seven

'Strive for five' was always disingenuous, though, because nobody has to actually strive to get a five.

How about making the seven goal a bit more honest: 'leaven to seven'?

ActiveArmor Firewall

...is a pile of crap, and is making my computer more difficult to use. So, I have nVidia ActiveArmor firewall installed, and it does this little thing where it pops up when things change so that I must either authorize or block a change. At some point, I (or someone using my computer) must have bloc...

Re: Purdie building and Irvine Building

the Irvine Lecture Theatre is easy to find. LOL. Go into the Irvine building (behind Sallies Quad) and turn immmediately left, along a corridor to the far end of the building then up a long flight of steps right to the top. Yes. Just make sure you don't go up the wrong flight of stairs, as the firs...

Re: How Long

About ten minutes, give or take. Depends how many slow-walking gits you get trapped behind.

Re: They say British Health Care is Rubbish.

I know, however, that my personal experience with the health centre in St Andrews has been horrible. I don't know whether it is because one of the secretaries working there is incompetent, or because they have some bias against American students, but on multiple occasions (I've lost count) when I'v...

Re: Best bank account?

P.P.S. Orudge, probably the reason a lot of your overseas friends use them (certainly the reason I went to them) is that they send a letter in the freshers packs for overseas students, which, if they are not actually, at least makes them appear to be officially endorsed by the university.

Re: Best bank account?

P.S. Obligatory: also RBS are destroying the planet by funding the dirtiest forms of oil extraction ever devised, killing ducks, giving people cancer, etc. blah blah blah.

Re: Best bank account?

RBS say they are flexible/welcoming/whatever for foreign students, but the account they'll give you is not a student account (though you may be led to believe it is -- I was), it is an "instant access savings account", i.e. a place to put your money and a card to withdraw it (no, not a deb...

Re: For Sale: Red Undergraduate Gown

There is some formal measurement system, but I'm not sure what it is. They're supposed to fall to about mid-calf when worn on the shoulders. I'm 5'10" and the gown fits me pretty well.

Re: Tipping in Scotland

What they said. But also: cafes! Tipping in cafes is nice, but optional if all you're doing is ordering a coffee -- but if you're ordering food, especially if it is full-service (particularly if it is hot food prepared on the premises), you ought to tip as though it were a restaurant. I used to work...

For Sale: Red Undergraduate Gown

I posted this a while ago on the 'Trading Stuff' board, but it occured to me that my actual target demographic has it's own board... Red Undergrad gown for sale. Length: 46". Good condition. Price £65 O.N.O. (IIRC, this was the going rate a few years ago when my generation was buying its gowns ...

Re: library employment query

Jon Purcell told us once, in one of those library development input meetings, that they don't employ* undergraduates because they have found undergraduates to be 'unreliable'. This was as part of a response to why the library can't hire more staff to keep it open longer. *Or perhaps, for legal reaso...

Re: Grad ball ticket exchange

Why can't they just be exchanged on the night when you go in?

If the tickets are taken away when exchanged for wristbands, then people can't do the swap-fraud thing you described.

Re: How much do things cost in St. Andrews?

Tennents? What is that? Is it as good as 'Pabst'? Because I love Pabst... Hold on. Is this guy for real? I don't know of anybody who drinks Pabst for any reason other than that it's cheaper than water. I am having trouble comprehending someone having a taste for both PBR and NorthWest microbrews. B...

Re: If you could change three things about the Union...

1) Actually following the Sustainability policy written by what was then called the E&E committee, a few years ago. E.g., the policy proscribes selling Coca-cola products and bottled water, both of which can be bought in Beaton's. (1.1: later opening hours for Beaton's.) 2) Participation in the ...

Re: Sexual health

The students' union has a drop-in sexual health clinic on the top floor on Wednesdays and Friday afternoons (though I think it might just be Wednesdays now?) They also do general public sexual health clinics on Fridays the hospital, though you have to make an appointment for those. Both will give yo...
