Re: 54% of Britons admit to being morons

Hm, that's a good point. Although, who really counts Dartmouth anyway? I know it's considered an Ivy, but I think most people have probably never heard of it. I don't even know where it is, despite being from the East coast and having attended a frou frou preparatory school that desperately tried to...

Re: 54% of Britons admit to being morons

Actually, there is a question mark at the end of my "statement," which implies that I doubted St A's position as a premier university. I suppose 87 is a pretty good rank, but I think that's the highest rank I've ever seen for St Andrews and considering the state of the library I don't thin...

Re: 54% of Britons admit to being morons

Is that supposed to prove me wrong or right?

Still, 87 is much better than I would have expected.

Re: 54% of Britons admit to being morons

One of the premier universities of the world?

If that's what you call this institution, then I fear for the intellectual future of our species.

Re: The Printers in the library

There have been many times when I've almost cried from frustration trying to print things in the library. Instead of getting my work done as necessary, I end up spending hours, literally hours, trying to print the articles I need, and only half the time do I actually succeed. Don't know if you alrea...

Re: Northern Ireland

Putting the problem on the back burner is the closest thing possible to a solution. Calming things down for a bit (which indeed has been the result, at least up to now) is successfully creating a generation of Northern Irish people who are far less passionate about the divide than those who can reme...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

Personally I think that for people like the principal and other university administrators, talking and negotiating with the student body is more important than a lot of the other stuff they do. I'm not saying that the responsibilities you mentioned aren't important, but responding to student protest...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

The term 'sit-in' seems only to have been used in this context by people who aren't involved in the protest. The organisers are calling it an 'occupation,' not a 'sit-in.' When an army occupies a city, they don't require their soldiers to sit in one place the entire time and not attend to any person...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

It has no balls, is pathetic, and is not attention-grabbing? How so? I may not agree with the goals of the protest but I don't see anything wrong with it the way they've organised it. It's certainly attention grabbing: everybody seems to have heard about it, it's received several pages of discussion...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

Oh PS I agree about the neutrality thing... but in effect you could say that the Eden Springs thing is an attempt to get the uni to stop funding an anti-Palestinian company. So that could be seen as a neutralising effort. The rest of the list of demands is a bit excessive, at least in the way that i...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

Yes, but coming to university here isn't a simple, one-time transaction. Students move here and spend four years living here (or more.. or fewer) over the course of their studies. It's more like a membership than a simple customer-retailer situation. After all, we do have elections, so there is at l...

Re: 60+ students occupy uni building in protest

In response to Blueswater, I agree with some of what you say. The university shouldn't be forced to take a position on a complicated, controversial and frankly irrelevant (to the interests of the university) issue like this. But people shouldn't be expected to decide on a university based on what br...

Re: Jade Goody has only months to live.

I read that a bit too quickly and thought it was a nickname for Jane Goodall.

There is now a vaccine for cervical cancer for women in their 20's and late teens. I know it's now available in America, although I'm not sure if it's available yet in the UK. Anyone know?

Re: Honours English

What are you doing on a university message board if you think degrees are worthless? Are you a struggling, unemployed graduate, or just a student-hater?

Re: Classics Library

Although often the library will be closed during normal opening hours, and after trekking all the way into town in search of a particular book, you might be greeted with a sign on the library door saying 'Sorry, but the Classics library will be closed from 2 PM to 4PM' or something like that. Drove ...

Re: Computer games you really don't like.

I'm really sorry if I offended people. You just have no idea how frustrating it is to see someone spend their whole life in front of a screen. The thing about books is that they end! And since coming to St Andrews I think there actually is kind of a mini stigma attached to staying home and reading i...

Re: Computer games you really don't like.

Hence the final sentence in my comment. At least people who spend all their time in the pub or on the golf course are interacting with people and seeing their friends. I know it doesn't apply to everyone, but both my brother and my boyfriend, the two men I know the best, regularly choose playing one...
