Re: Urgent: Local PC components?

Sorry if this seems blindingly obvious, but couldn't you pull your hard drive out, stick it in another computer (and/or a USB->SATA adapter), and then print or email the notes to yourself?

Re: Getting to Edinburgh Airport for a 6am flight.

I've stayed at a good hostel right across from Haymarket the night before an early flight. It was less than 10 quid for the mixed dorm and only slightly more for the female dorm. I was able to easily catch the airporter from Haymarket. I took a train down the night before, as the last Edinburgh tra...

Honestly, I'll bet it tastes like crap. Other high-ABV beers have been brewed in small batches for quite some time, and the general consensus is that they're not very good.

Re: Info About St. Andrews for a Study Abroad student!

A few linguistic tips: semester = term school/college = university/uni dorm = hall/residence/accommodation (in ascending order of formality) balls = balls club = society (except in the case of sports) bar = pub professor = lecturer math = maths course = module major = course/degree Europe ≠ UK emerg...

Re: Calvin Harris anyone?

I can't comment on the accuracy of that statment, except for that it'd be a lot of money for the Union to spend on an artist (and a lot of risk -- the profit margins on anything more complicated than a bop are razor-thin) He's also got a fairly full schedule in November, including a gig at Fat Sams ...

Re: What if I want to work out?

The Tourist Information shop on Market St will sell you a number of maps with good cycling routes highlighted. There's a national network of designated cycling routes along (presumably) low-volume roads with wide shoulders. Some of the roads surrounding St Andrews are extremely narrow, so do be care...

Re: Starfields... flogging a dead horse?

Where do you draw the line between 'DJ' and 'Producer'?

I don't think that anybody would argue that Moby, BT, or Daft Punk aren't talented musicians, even if you dislike their particular brand of music. However, their live performances *are* more or less DJ acts.

Re: St. Andrews: Time for a law faculty?

Want to become a lawyer? Buckle up, it's a rough ride. In tuition alone, the postgraduate route to qualification can cost £16,000

Most Americans would chuckle at this statement. £16,000 won't pay for a single undergraduate year at most universities.

Re: STUDENT NEWSPAPER

I've always got the impression that The Saint has been wildly inconsistent throughout the years. Most of the time, there's some group that is Not Pleased with the way the newspaper does its reporting. As with most student-run newspapers, its staff changes frequently enough that its viewpoints tend t...

Re: Tipping in Scotland

Tipping baffles me. Especially in America where it borders on begging, though understandably they expect it because of the culture, but I expect some out of the ordinary service in return, yknow if they're good fun or particularly efficient. That seems to be the case in the UK...on the whole don't ...

Re: Windsurfing

So, I see pictures of people windsurfing in St. Andrews and Dundee, but isn't it cold there? Anyone on here a windsurfer? Is there a season/temperature that you wait for? Or is everyone packin' a drysuit? And, does the university have any equipment for rent? I'd pack a drysuit. It might not be nece...

Re: Nearest Barclay's?

I'm guessing you use Bank of America? When I was in St Andrews, it was free to use the RBS ATMs with a BoA debit card -- unlike the US, there are no 3rd-party ATM surcharges in the UK. Bank of America added a 1% surcharge on top of the inter-bank exchange rate, which is as low of a rate as you're go...

Re: Road Biking

Wind can be a problem when riding along the coast. It's not much fun to pedal against an oncoming gale. One of the shops on Market St will sell you maps that outline good roads for cycling around Fife. The UK has an excellent nationwide network of designated cycle routes. Truth be told, I do wish I'...

Re: So I hear Aikmans has gone Bankrupt?

A base-10 system was actually proposed for American units of measure shortly after the revolution (and before France's adoption of metric units) that used the old British system's base-units. For unknown reasons, it was never adopted. Precisely the same reason that German was never adopted as the n...

Re: So I hear Aikmans has gone Bankrupt?

Indeed! I was shocked to discover that the NPH sold inexpensive snacks in reasonably-sized portions. I've never understood the British system for measuring fuel economy. Certainly miles per liter would make the most sense for the current state of affairs? (British MPG is also not equal to American M...

Re: So I hear Aikmans has gone Bankrupt?

I on the other hand should be moving to the US, Minnesota to be precise, and it seems their alcohol laws are pretty reasonable (except the whole over-21 thing, but that won't be an issue for me anyway) - quite comparable to the UK if nothing else. Although the US doesn't know what size a proper pin...
