Re: The burning of effigies...

I'm no Conservative but this is kind of sad. This is the sort of thing LeftSoc would do and everyone knows how much of a joke they are. But the society representing one of the two major parties, and the one currently in power? Nice.....

Re: How busy is St Andrews?

Well, term has begun proper (Freshers' Week anyhow) so the place is flooded with students once again.

Re: Wanted: Bike that works.

I have a bike for sale, some guy left it in my yard as he didn't like that it was a hand-me-down. E-mail me.

Re: Class Experience

It's pretty much par for the course based on my experience of philosophy and modern/mediaeval history. Not much you can do, really - find the people who are also interested, chat to them outside of class, otherwise just get on with it. Your time is your time and their time is theirs *shrug*

Re: Rally and general assembly against the coming cuts

Hennessy, Since I actually know Merlin (he's my academic father) I'll point out that you really don't know anything about him and that his political views are very much genuine. It's easy to be snarky on the internet, but you could try being a little politer when referring to people by name who you ...

Re: Boardgames

Hi,

The University does have a Boardgames Society. I'm not sure on their contact details but they'll probably be around at the Freshers Fayre.

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

No, I'm saying I'm satisfied that I did include Labour in what I originally attempted to post. Not having had anything to do with the coding of this web site, I can't comment as to why it mightn't have appeared, but I'm grateful to the moderator for correcting the mistake. Nevertheless the thread t...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about. When I submitted the poll, it had Labour as an option; I know this because I still have the text I pasted into it in the 'Notes' file on my desktop, which I'd used to put the options into alphabetical order. When I checked back last week, Labour ...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

I was merely hazarding a suggestion as to how David Bean's poll malfunction came about, since his explanation was not accepted. An alternative hypothesis would be that David is so allergic to Labour that his subconscious intervened and although he thought that he had added Labour and thought that h...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

I could respond in a similarly eloquent way, but I think the word 'fail' suffices quite well. I think you are misunderstanding David Bean. He, I believe, is referring to the presence of the option 'Socialist party (any)', which encompasses Labour. Oh come on, that's absurd. The Labour party, at the...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

Nothing of the sort! The implication that certain posters had difficulty reading English was made by their own conduct, in twice accusing me of having left Labour off a list of voting options, when it was there as plain as day. I'd submit there's a big difference between making that observation and...

Re: Aftermath

A fair referendum on PR. If that's what we gain then the price is worth it. We won't. The Tories held fast at AV. The hope is that it's an easier conversion from AV to STV as it's the same balloting system; PR-STV is just AV with multi-member constituencies. Step 1: Get a referendum on AV, Step 2: ...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

My main image of UKIP was formed at a debate I saw in School 5 in late 2007/early 2008. The UKIP speaker insisted that the EU was going to start the First World War all over again. Everyone present laughed uproariously, and he looked genuinely surprised that we didn't all agree with him. I have the...

Re: General election 2010 - who will (or would) you vote for?

Unless I'm mistaken, you've not included the Labour Party in your poll. My home constituency is Pudsey, which Labour has held since 1997. Prior to that, it had been Conservative since 1928. I'm registered in North East Fife, and plan to vote Labour. This is a safe seat for the LibDems; my hope is th...

Re: Digital Economy Bill

Based on a little googlefu the reason for your MP not voting is, in his own words: "I'm happy to explain why I did not vote at the end of the Digital Economy Bill late on Wednesday evening. Quite simply, I had to leave Westminster after the Transport debate in order to be back in the constituen...

Re: Who is the best current stand-up?

In what possible way is Michael McIntyre anything like Boris Johnson? In fact, the only context they both fit in is Have I Got News for You, and they were both very different. Johnson - funny due to his dazed and confused performance as host, and McIntyre on his game, delivering a sharp impression ...

Re: Dean's list?

What are the requirements to get onto the Dean's list? My average has been above 16.5 for several semesters, but I've never received a letter or had a thing on my transcript. :( http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/administration/deans/deanslist/ Mean of over 16.5 for an entire year of at least 120 credits,...

Re: Star Trek (spoilers)

This is very curious. All of my American friends (Trekkies and not) who have seen the film (I haven't yet) have absolutely loved it. Most have gone to see it multiple times. Meanwhile, here is a thread with a considerable number of our cousins across the Pond dedicated to hating the new movie. Is t...
