Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

1. You're right, of course. Despite all appearnaces, and being a "contributor" to this site, he was not speaking in gentle mockery of Internet people, including himself. No. He uttered those foul words of deprecation with you specifically in mind, and a whole horde of denizens of the Inter...

Re: If you could change three things about the Union...

I bet you could auction off positions on the paintover team. There are so many people craving the satisfaction of ruining it.

I'm bringing this to SSC.

Re: If you could change three things about the Union...

...the atrocious mural in the Salad Bowl... It's like something from the Director's Cut of The Shining. We should have a sponsored paint-a-thon to raise money for the Charities Campaign. (Just to paint over it.) Then, we should have a competition to replace it with something interesting. I've heard...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

The second speaker for the opposition was a bit of a bad choice imho. It was painful to listen to him. Besides the muttering and stammering involved in his part, the use of the term "keyboard warrior" without actually appearing to know what it means made him look a little childish. Feargh...

Re: Sinner Debate

"THBT e-debating is the future" is, as you suggest, a bit too self-referential, and, to an extent, self-proving. Do you want something Internet-related? You could have something on Internet surveillance, although I imagine it would be difficult to find people to argue in favour of that. I ...

Re: Sinner Debate

A debate carping about the Union, i.e. every other day on The Sinner. Some of the motions may be too nerdy, but you could scan these sites for inspiration: http://flynn.debating.net/motions2.htm http://wiki.idebate.org/index.php/Welcome_to_Debatepedia%21 http://www.debate-motions.info/ There are som...

A while ago someone showed me this website:

It seems to follow the same principles.

The debate podcast/stream is now available at http://www.standrewsradio.com/.

I call for a standing ovation for the technical magicians at STAR, for all the time and effort they put invested in recording (and editing) the debate.

Re: dwindling numbers

I should add that I was also impressed by the late candidate for Clerk, Ms Averill, who had clearly bothered to do some research, was obviously keen, and the proud owner of a fountain pen. (Apparently a necessity...) I hope she'll run next year! It was encouraging to see interest in what can be a th...

Re: dwindling numbers

Attendance We had approximately 181 people at my Inaugural Debate; we had to turn people away. Parliament Hall was also filled to capacity for the Global Warming Debate, one of Jessica's great successes. (Sssssibilance). She also retained strong numbers quite far into the semester: there is the almo...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

This House Would High-Five the Principal As regards the division in Parliament Hall on Wednesday: votes for the proposition: 78; votes for the opposition, 82; abstentions, 21. The motion fell. I thoroughly enjoyed the debate, and I hope others did too. (Thanks, RandomMusings!)The superb magicians at...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

You mean "another in the armhole of his waistcoat". I doubt very much that Churchill ever appeared without a waistcoat in the House of Commons, and to clutch one's braces when wearing one requires some substantial disarrangement of one's costume. OK then, Churchill pacing around his study...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Deary me, you are a pompous one, aren't you? I'm sorry. I'm new round here, and was only trying to blend in. (I'm happy to accept Best Supporting Windbag, in deference to more bombastic fellow Sinners. Hey, do you think I could get Best Newcomer?) Most of the verbal flatulence is on your side of th...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Washing out dirty linen in public eh? I am beginning to despise this Principal more and more, not only for her limp liberal ways but also for her lack of imagination and blatant appeal to nonsensical populist mores. Clearly you weren't paying attention when I addressed this a couple of hours ago. G...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

This is exhausting. Andrew, I agree with you. (Hearty handshake.) Mr Bean, I promise I'll try to reign in my sarcasm; it's a powerful reflex. I have every respect for you personally but I do have some questions. I do think that this is an issue the General Council has a legitimate interest in. What ...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Lastly, Owen, I'm sure you didn't mean it to come across as it has but your remark about the "few disgruntled alumni who show up to General Council meetings" felt dismissive, presumptuous and hurtful. Many of the graduates I know, myself included, take our membership of the General Counci...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I wasn't suggesting she would (or should) ignore the views of alumni. I merely observed that I doubted she would roll over and die at the first sign of opposition, and suggested that if they chose to argue with her they would find a much more assured and resilient opponent than they might expect. Sh...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

This Principal doesn't strike me as being easily cowed, and I don't for a moment imagine that the objections of the General Council will be the slightest impediment to her. (If it's 1 against 250 I can only feel sorry for the 250.) I have a vague sense that that's a Thatcher quotation... P.S. Hear, ...
