Re: Anti-Gay Bishop appointed to School of Divinity

Re: Anti-Gay Bishop appointed to School of Divinity

When a traditional belief isn't compatible with modernity then it needs to be changed or forgotten. Who decides what is compatible with "modernity"? Who decides that "modernity" is correct? Just because the majority of people (supposedly) agree with something doesn't mean it's m...

Re: Anti-Gay Bishop appointed to School of Divinity

I'm not sure, as Haunted has suggested, that anyone on this thread has suggested that homosexuals are evil. Not agreeing with gay marriage isn't the same thing as suggesting this. I think the usual Christian approach to homosexuality nowadays is that it's wrong, but that everyone is wrong in some as...

Re: Staff Redundancies in Modern Languages

It's quite clear that Why? has never attempted to learn a foreign language to a decent standard. Yes, there are plenty of products on the market which will help you grasp the basics. Can they get you anywhere near a level necessary to actually have a conversation with someone? No. Trust me, you NEED...

Re: Staff Redundancies in Modern Languages

Perhaps Fact not Fiction and Reality Check could be made redundant and their salaries diverted to plug this supposed deficit modern languages are running up. They clearly dislike their jobs, they clearly dislike students and they are clearly unaware of data protection, not to mention their failure t...

Re: 54% of Britons admit to being morons

I've met several Christians who hold this view. Christians who are science-savvy enough not to reject evolution. What they claim is that the bible isn't the inspired word of God or, more accurately, it is ... but some parts of it aren't meant to be taken literally. Some will claim that the bible is...

Re: Old people are crippling the UK bus network!

That £1 cost by car... I'm assuming that you're not factoring-in road tax, insurance and an annual MOT? Given that I need a car for necessary weekly trips to Perth that's incidental, though I reckon that if I made the St Andrews trip five times a week during term (which I do and more) even with ins...

Re: Old people are crippling the UK bus network!

I have to agree that the price is extortionate. I also live in Cupar and, thankfully, have a car which costs me less than a pound one way in comparison to £3.30(ish) one way on the bus, which is also slower, less comfortable and doesn't provide me with Terry Wogan's dulcet tones of a morning.

Re: Is the decline of the West inevitable?

On the other, I'm not sure how one could equivocally say that the civilization that brought about the Hubble Telescope, the HLC, Richard Dawkins, Microsoft Windows (even if you hate it, you know you depend on it), and Cable TV Why stop there? How about the holocaust, nuclear weapons, the Daily Mail...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I might add that all proceeds from Toastie Bar go to Families First. Not this Families First? http://www.families-first.org.uk/index.html The pressure group whose entire aim seems to be about bringing back corporal punishment for children? Nope, this one http://www.digitalfife.com/index.asp?MainID=...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I found the Principal's email rather vague. What exactly does she mean by withdrawing university support? It could boil down to very little and doesn't necessarily mean Lower College Lawn will no longer be made available for balls, the quad for the procession, etc. I for one hope it doesn't affect s...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

But Christianity is the only one in which you don't work to get to God or transcendence of whatever, that's where the difference lies. Which brand of christianity are we talking about here, because they all tend to differ on these points? And even so, I have just made up my own religion in which yo...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

Hang on, you claim that no such proof is possible but then state that the burden of proof (that which is impossible) is on those who assert. In other words, you're saying it's impossible but it's my responsibility to do it? Is this an unreasonable position? It's the one I hold as a technical agnost...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

The assumption, as you've stated, is that the universe in completely natural. If the universe is completely natural than that automatically means that Christianity is false because there would be no creator God. why not just say god is natural? Plenty of other people are fine with that. But, I agre...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

I'm curious to know, on the basis of your own admitted ignorance of other religions, how exactly is Christianity unique, how does it stand out precisely? I'm sorry, I don't recall admitting ignorance, though I guess the comment in the above post could be read as such. Apologies. Whereas obviously m...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

Let's examine this comparatively. If by 'claims' you mean something like vague like "the universe exists" then ok, granted. However, we might as well say that "if the claims of the Koran are not true, there would be nothing". If I just now write down a complete book of waffle, w...

Re: Blasphemy a crime under UN resolution

Yep, if Christianity was completely false there would be nothing. No universe? No gauge bosons? The assumption that the universe requires a creative intelligence in order to even exist is unsubstantiated. Try removing the mental block you have installed and imagine the world, not without christiani...
