Re:

My point was just that the money isn't given to the University at all. It goes to the General Council as a distinct entity and, as such, isn't a not-so-clandestine fund-raising scheme. The membership of the General Council decides how they want to spend it, not the University. For pedants: I'll apol...

Re:

Except that the Uni doesn't see a penny out of the money, which instead goes on things such as subsidizing the Garden Parties for new members, the production and shipping of the Alumnus Chronicle, etc.

In sum, no.

Ah, but they weren't in a big pretty folder marked "Strategic Plan" though, which I believe makes all the difference. When Derek went through his "must write the strategic plan" phase when he was AP, I remember having to sit down with an outside consultant along with all the trading department chief...

I like how he's being referred to as Uncle Frank in public now.

Re:

Quoting Adam Fellows from 14:30, 2nd Nov 2006 it was one of the first things that was raised as both an UG and a PG issue in the very first Student Library Users' Group meeting that we were both at. I try and block out those memories; of course, the same excuses that they were peddling back then fo...

Quoting The Unwilling from 14:08, 2nd Nov 2006 It's not as if Rob did anything to help this, it was something the library was sorting out all along. Don't get me wrong, I think the later opening hours are a boon for both students and staff, but does the same not apply to the later opening hours? PG...

Re:

Quoting Dave the Explosive Newt from 10:39, 1st Nov 2006 He just wore his cleric's robes - and he didn't kneel at all, only bowed slightly. This sort of scenario was where Sir Kenneth was at his most masterfully clever and slightly devious. In another ludicrously over-hyped honorary degree ceremony...

Re:

Quoting exnihilo from 10:53, 30th Oct 2006
I'm a little miffed to be dismissed by a Board member in quite so off-hand a way.

I'm sensing a "Don't they know who I am?!?" moment coming.

What's the exact number of UDS HLMs anyway?

It's also worth pointing out that some of the members of permanent staff don't sit on things such as the Association's Financial Executive, which has had led, at least once on this thread so far as I can tell, to some rather dodgy "facts" having been offered up about the Union's financial situation....

Quoting exnihilo from 23:22, 13th Oct 2006 (Edit: PS I'm surprised to hear you claiming credit, Ralph, for what is, frankly, an administrative abortion.) Oh, don't get me wrong. The execution of the present system is an abomination and has been for yonks. However, I feel that the problems are more ...

Quoting David Bean from 16:59, 13th Oct 2006 when Ben Spires 'reformed' the SRC a few years ago he did it with the direct intention of buggering the body up As one of the architects of the present system, I really do defy you, David, to back that statement up with fact. Quoting Eliot Wilson from 10:54, 24th Aug 2006 Really? I don't remember getting one of them. Maybe it, ahem, got lost in the post somewhere between St Mary's Place and my then-residence on Hope Street. I never claimed that you'd received it - I merely said that they were awarded. I have a vague rec...

Quoting David Bean from 02:09, 24th Aug 2006 they jointly won the John Honey Award for their efforts. Funny, their names aren't on the cup, so that's not actually true. They did, however, get awarded special certificates of special achievement which, I believe, DoC Heaney made with her own loving h...

Quoting from 16:38, 3rd Aug 2006If you're a fan of peanut butter, you should probably bring your own (though I think Butler & Co sells it...?)

They do; however, if you're after Concord grape jelly, you're best advised to do your own importing.

Re:

Quoting harmless loony from 20:07, 5th Jul 2006 Ralph, my understanding was that we didn't enter a team to start with - let alone make it to the filming stage. I hadn't heard that, but it wouldn't shock me. The reason I gave, though, is why St Andrews hasn't appeared in some years in the past. It s...

Indeed, one of the speakers at last night's Ross Cup suggested that only people who have children whilst in their teens themselves can be considered fit parents. It didn't even come from the Dundee side of the table, as the kids repeatedly pointed out.
