Quoting dirac from 21:50, 26th Nov 2005
I know who Gringo is talking about.
James is prince of the tennis club, and goes to Westport and Ma Bells ALOT. Is this not evidence enough? He is a total yah.

Tennis always struck me as ferociously middle class. Unless you're talking Real Tennis?

Re:

None taken, Mr. Dunn!

ezra--if you've read Alter's work, then you should be well aware of why I chose to note it to you, since he's written on *precisely* the issue at hand.

Re:

Quoting ezra from 03:48, 18th Nov 2005 I take it, though, that you're an undergrad.? And you are confusing two different debates: that concerning symbolic meaning and the Putnam-esque question of whether "meaning" is is the head. No, I'm not. On both counts. Do you really pubish in this area? Pleas...

Re:

Quoting exnihilo from 22:09, 17th Nov 2005 it is my understanding, Mr Dunn, that the trousers that accompany a dinner jacket tend to have a single stripe and those that accompany tails would tend to be double or braid. Certainly, mine are braid for my tails. And you're right, Mr Renouf, we should a...

Quoting exnihilo from 20:30, 17th Nov 2005
And once again we're in a philosophy seminar. Sigh. Wearying for those of us not "paid to think", guess I really am just using my brain to cool my blood.

Oh, I *like* that last comment! I'm going to use it in a derogatory way in my next lecture!

Re:

Quoting ezra from 02:29, 16th Nov 2005 Quoting BasilSeal from 22:53, 15th Nov 2005 I'm afraid that Fry's right on this one, ezra. Really? So you think that common usage dictates meaning? So, let me see: words with no common usage (like 'lepton', or 'liminal') have no meaning? Words cannot be genera...

Re:

This isn't meant to a comment on Ezra, but I can assure exnihilo that "tome" and "attitude" don't impress anyone in philosophy, either!

Very much the reverse, in fact.

Quoting Anon. from 16:57, 8th Nov 2005 Quoting Jason Dunn from 14:54, 8th Nov 2005 On the subject of tweed jackets, Ede and Ravenscroft have in their catalogue a model wearing a tweed jacket and a bengal striped shirt. I think this just looks plain wrong. I haven't seen the catalogue yet either, bu...

Also, does anyone have a scan of a UC tie? I don't, and M&D have said one would be useful for them to identify it. Apparently they do a lot of ties for St Andrews!

United College ties

Maddocks and Dick have just informed me that they'll do a small run of 36 United College ties. I've yet to find out the price, but it certainly won't be for more than the price Loot was charging. Would anyone be interested in such a tie? If so, let me know! (Email in previous post.)

The Ethics of Tie Wearing

Chaps, As an academic philosopher I get to write on topics that are very interesting to me, but of limited interest to most of the population! (With the possible exception of my recent book, *Stakes and Kidneys*, arguing for markets for human organs!) However, to lighten things up a bit I've written...
